Thinking about either

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent … pg__header ($95)
http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-500-Porta … amp;sr=8-1 ($87)

The seagate looks a bit nicer and got slightly more favorable reviews. Anyone with experience?

Other than Seagate's 1.5TB fiasco...

Why USB powered only? Really limits you in terms of size/cost

I cant be bothered to always have it plugged in and turn it on and then find the cord and stretch it all the way to my laptop. I have a cramped desk and right now I have a 500g that isnt USB powered and I never use it, it's just too much of a hassle. I want something that I can use to back up my laptop on regular intervals and basically use like a big jump drive. My imoega just sits in my desk drawer - too big, heavy, have to plug into wall, etc. It's fine if I was say storing a bunch of video footage but day-to-day use is just... limited.

tldr; CBA to regularly back up my shit without USB powered.

Its your money...

I'd say this then - http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-P … amp;sr=1-3

Or this http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Portable- … amp;sr=1-1

I'd trust WD and Samsung more, but thats personal opinion (with 6 external hdds myself)
i like those western digital passports..

Simpler and while being more expensive they are also laptop drives which are more durable as a portable drive than a 3.5" desktop drive.

That western digital got terrible reviews on amazon.

My sis has the seagate linked in the OP (250g) and she seems to like it, so im leaning towards that. My mom has 12-15 ext HDDs with most of them seagate as well, so...

just wanted opinions, I think I'll ignore all of yours.

Simpler?  Because it has one less plug? And he's plugging his laptop in anyways...

I highly doubt theres a significant difference in durability, I've dropped full sized externals with no problem.  Also, I know a lot of people who had problems with their USB ports not supplying enough power and having to order a dual end USB cord, taking up 2 USB ports

I mean, if he wants one sure.  But I really see no legitimate reason to get one other than laziness

Yikes, apparently they changed for the worse since I got mine.  Mine works quite well (the previous model)

I also have that Toshiba at 320GB.  It's slow.

The Samsung one looks really good though, I'd go for that if I were you.

Also remember to format it to NTFS when you get it!

laziness, portability... my laptop isn't my gaming machine and doesn't always stay plugged in.

I've got that seagate 320gb. It's pretty good has data encryption for your porn. Also has an autobackup facility.

Bollocks they do. Close to Maxtor on failure rates.
