G'day lads,

I'm looking at throwing about $4000 AU (or $3556 USD) into a gaming pc and need your thoughts on this setup:

Case: 1 x ThermalTake Armor+ MX Aluminium Tower Case - Black
USB, eSATA, HD Audio, 23cm Fan, Side Window, NO PSU - ATX

Power Supply: 1 x Corsair 1000W HX1000W Power Supply - ATX 12V v2.2, 140mm Fan, Modular Cables, SLI Ready
10x SATA, 6x PCI-E 8-pin (6-pin Compatible)

Motherboard: 1 x Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Motherboard
LGA1366, X58, ICH10R, QPI 6.4GT/s, 6xDDR3-2200, 4xPCI-Ex16 v2.0, 2xSATA-III, 8xSATA-II, 2xeSATA, 1xATA-133, RAID, 2xGigLAN, 8Chl-HD, USB3.0, ATX

CPUs | Processor: 1 x Core i7 950 Quad Core (3.06GHz) - LGA1366, 4.8GT/s QPI, 8MB Cache

Cooling: 1 x Corsair CWCH50-1 Cooling Hydro Series H50 CPU Watercooler

Memory - RAM: 6GB (3 x 2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 RAM - 9-9-9-24

Hard Drives - Internal: 1 x Western Digital 300GB 10,000rpm Serial ATA-II-300 HDD w. 16MB Cache (WD3000HLFS) Velociraptor
Backplane Ready

Hard Drives - Internal: 1 x 500GB 7200rpm Serial ATA-II-300 HDD

CD/DVD/Floppy Drive: 1 x 22x DVD+-RW Dual Layer DVD Burner

Video Card(s): 2 x Gigabyte Radeon HD 5850 - 1GB DDR5
256-bit, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, HDTV, HDCP, Fansink - PCI-Ex16 v2.0 (725MHz, 4.0GHz)

Keyboard: 1 x Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (Refresh) (Keyboard Only)

Mice: 1 x Logitech G5 Laser Mouse 2007

Monitor: 1 x 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor
Total: $3,990.40

You can screw around with any of the options for the setup here and if you'd like to, see my alternatives and post a recommended setup that's in budget which you think is the better option.

It's mainly the GFX card set-up I'm not decided on as yet. Am I better for sli/crossfire/a single powerful gfx card?

I've never had a water cooled system before, but think I'll probably need it for this rig anyway. As well as the case with extra fans.

After that, all I have to buy will be speakers.

Pros/cons?

Cheers.

950 is a waste, get 920 D0.

PSU is overkill, get a <850w.

If you are gettin 22ich LCD, it better be 120Hz so you can benefit from having CF or you are throwing money away. CF and SLi benefit most from 120Hz, the extra muscle can show off unlike 60Hz and 60fps.

Get SSD for OS, that budget fits one just great. Intel X25-M G2 80GB will do.

If you are undecided about gfx, you might just get one HD 5870 and see if its enough at first.

What manufacturer is that ram?

Why that case?

Powerful single 5970 should be fine.

Get 1866mhz ram instead for overclocking.

As panzer said, 920 should be fine just overclock that bitch.

Buy a Promilitech mega shadow and 2 Delta fans @5400 RPM <3

Core i7 950 Quad Core (3.06GHz)

It's a $300 difference so you're probably right, not worth it. I could always try over-clocking the 920 too. Cheers.

Would an 850w handle a potential 2nd/3rd gfx card if I were to another in the future? (it'd probably be the only change I'd make to the system in terms of upgrades when the times comes)

These are the two choices I'm likely to buy from a local retailer so I can better choose my options and also go for a reliable RAM manufacturer. I'll keep in mind getting a 120Hz monitor when I buy one. Thanks a lot for that.

That's a good idea, I'll get a SSD for the OS and whatever other HDD for my games, etc.

I'd rather start with 2 gfx cards cause I know how they can have a habit of dying, and I really want to step up from my current 8800gt 512mb. lol

Case doesn't really concern me, but that case just had more cooling and an exhaust. Which is good since I live in Australia and it's always bloody hot.

Thanks again for the help. I'll def grab monitor and ram from a local retailer.

D: Prebuilt?

Like Panzer said, 1kW is wayyyy too much.

I wouldn't get a Gigabyte mobo again, but I guess that's my preference, based on a very cheap one.

950 is just a overclocked-out-the-box 920, so get a 920 and do it yourself.

I'm gonna get the H50 myself, so that's pretty sweet. You can tell me how it is.

Memory looks good, so long as it's a decent brand.

Velociraptor is getting shunted by SSD. For price per gB per speed, an SSD is a much better buy. If you need the extra space, you can get a 1TB instead of a 500GB.. again we'd need to know brand of HDD before we can judge it.. I recommend this one.

The rest looks good until the monitors, we really need moar infos on that.

Just don't get the Velociraptor. Obsolete now and not worth the money. Get an SSD.

Screw crossfire/sli. Its notoriously buggy. Most of the people I know can only use the two cards on certain games. Better buying an ATI 59XX and then in a few years when the price has dropped buy another one and crossfire them. By that point you will only be playing games which where developed with crossfire in mind. ie new ones.
Also for that rig and considering the money you are spending id go for an ASUS Mobo which was designed for gaming.

HD 5970 is 2 GPUs and pretty much same thing as CF.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll take all this into consideration.

I start saving for the rig next week so have some time to shop around. Just thought I'd get your reactions to the above specs first and see where to head from there.

I was right to do so.

Yeah an 800 Watt PSU would be fine... don't bother crossfiring or SLI with only 22". Hell I got a 24" and I'm fine on a single GFX, no game is that demanding.

Definitely look into other cases, I'd say an Antec 900 is good or the Corsair Obsidian 800D (Which panzer has is AWSM)

And don't get prebuilt! You'll save up to something like 20% and have fun making it yourself.

Obsidian maks me slightly moist. wat.

Looks like a good build Reaps, but like Fin says, do it yourself, you'll save money, and have fun.

Also, I can't really offer any more opinions as these guys have done it fantastically. SSD>VRaptor Check. Single GFX>CF Check. 920>950 Check. Couldn't have put it better
