This happend to me too after I installed the new patch. All it was, was my firewall blocking BF2, maybe your settings got changed for your firewall or something of that sort.

I just went into the settings and hit allow on everything I could for BF2.exe
Well to be honest if they get me on a KP server, meh, stats gone, oh well

If you encounter connection problems especially after applying a new patch, you might want to try a manual punkbuster update. That worked perfectly for me.
