OK still not resolved I am going definitely for an AMD since a good enough Intel ends up over my budget

I still have to make a choice between Phenom II and Athlon II

1. AMD Phenom II X2 550 Callisto 3.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache
Its just 76€ and its a Black Edition.  It can be overclocked to 3.5 with stock cooler with no overheating or stability problems.

2. AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache

Few € difference in price so that's not a deciding factor.


Athlon is quad core compared to dual core Phenom, but Athlon doesn't have the very important L3 cashe that phenom has. Phenom is also much stronger per core. After looking at endless reviews and comparisons between the two, for example:

from I pieced together Athlon beats the Phenom only in few tests, and almost none games. Apparently most games cant fully utilize 4 cores or something like that. My opinion is that currently Phenom II is a better choice.

So, people smarter than me, am I right or am I wrong?. What about the near future? And more importantly does anyone have one of the 2 CPUs I listed?

Only non BE Phenom x2 is the 545 which is 2x3.0 GHz insted of 2x3.1 and only 1.99 cheaper
