I have the same thing this year. I bought some of those same pellets and have not been happy with them either. They may work when it is warmer though. I don't have any leakage yet, but I check it every day. I watched my neighbor beat on his roof with a small hatchet for about 6 hours. He had about 30 feet he chipped off. Was about the same thickness too.

My Dad once had a lot of ice on the roof, I think he took it off with an axe. I don't know if it was an ice-dam or not, I was too young to remember.
