my current monitor works fine but I have some extra money from my tax return and wanted to know how much of a difference there will be between my current monitor and the one I am thinking of buying.

Hmm, they're both very low-end monitors. Not worth it tbh.

i personally wouldn't make the change, your going from a 1680x1050 to a 1600x900. I wouldn't upgrade until you can buy a bigger and or higher resolution monitor.

the thing that made me wonder is my current monitor has a contrast ratio of 1,000:1 and a 5ms response time and the new one has a 50,000:1 ratio and a 2ms response time.

What would you guys consider to be a good mid to high end monitor that would make a HUGE difference ?

It would be a pretty noticeable difference and in my opinion worth it (better quality, larger screen size, higher resolution) but your 9800GT will start to struggle with newer games at 1920x1200 without turning down the settings.

Yeah the higher res will make your PC brick itself.

You could do what I did, go for a 1680x1050 monitor. I went with this one - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164143

Couldn't find it on Newegg though.

The T240 is certainly good but not worth the price at all. A 24" monitor can be found in the $200 range. If you don't got the money; save up because thats the only thing I would say is worth it.

Don't be sold on contrast ratio. All TN panels have 1000:1 contrast ratio. The enormous numbers is dynamic contrast ratio achieved by turning off or dimming the backlight. In fast paste video games that just translates to wildly varying brightness or slow trasitions which you don't notice at all.

Response time is necessary for video gaming. Lower is better but anything 5ms or lower is acceptable and you won't notice much difference.

One thing people don't usually consider is color. Usually it is rated as % of NTSC but hardly ever advertised because all TN panels have bad color. TN panels make up 90% of the monitor market because they are cheap, most of them offer 72% of NTSC which is averge. Anything lower I would avoid. Panels like the Samsung T240 I think has over 80% which is very good. My current monitor has 115% and it looks amazing.

Most of all look for resolution. I prefer anything over 1920x1080 but do look for a 1920x1200 one.
