Been getting a lot of these lately on my PC. Wikipedia suggests it's a hardware issue. My PC is cool as a cucumber, so it's not overheating. Seems to be happening whenever it's under a decent but not exuberant amount of stress.

Crashes usually occur when I'm playing BF2:BC or whenever I have hammer and tf2 open simultaneously.

I can't afford to do anything drastic because my laptop was just sent in for repair and I need a computer for school work. It's not a dell computer so there's no real support to call, and the place that built it will probably just tell me to bring it in.

Anything I can do? I can pursue it more easily once I get my laptop back, but that might be another week or two.

"Removable device" should be an option in the Boot priority section of the BIOS

my kb and mouse don't get power until after the windows splash. I can't even get to the boot menu. Wtf.

ed: also TF2 now takes forever to "prepare to launch", dunno if it's connected.

If you can't get into BIOS then you're pretty much fucked.

run chkdsk
you can right click on the C drive that has your OS on it... then choose properties... tools
then choose error checking.... than it will need to reboot to check for errors before startup.

it also might be your power supply under stress?

memory is finicky enough as it is...running a memtest that will give you any more false positives than the absolute bare minimum just makes things worse.

just got a windows error saying it was unable to save some random shit in some place i've never heard of, then it said it was probably due to hardware failure.

defo sounds like a memory issue.  try removing and swapping sticks of memory to see if it goes away.  and go find a ps/2 keyboard.

Gotten 6 more blue screens of death today. I loaded up BlueScreenViewer, and it seems they're all caused by hal.dll, Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL.

I'm assuming it's some sort of hardware issue then, but dunno what still. I want to drop it off at the place that built it while I'm off at spring break. If the repairs will be too high I'll probably just scrap this PC and build something from near scratch.

the hal is an essential system file. that means the os is essentially toasted. anything on the drive you wanna keep?

it can all go to hell as far as i'm concerned

so this is an OS issue not a hardware issue? I mean i'm no expert but it does say hardware...

It could mean your hard drive is going bad and OS sectors are fucked, it could mean your memory is going bad and is making your OS fuck up, it could mean you just need to format and reinstall windows.

There is.

You can replace the hal.dll file with one that's on your Windows disc, see if it sorts it.

Also, run HDTune to see if you do have any bad hard drive sectors.

technically you can't - you could replace the file "hal.dll" which is a dynamic link library, the hardware abstraction layer itself is created each time you boot. it's part of the process. that's why it's important to have the correct drivers for your hardware.
