I haven't experienced a power outage since I was in the Army and forgot to fuel the generator one day That was 5 1/2 years ago. Before that? Maybe once when I was a kid.
Yeah, as suggested the need for increased reliability really depends on where you live, but there are a whole lot of places in which aerial infrastructure just does not cut it. I'm noticing a lot of 'here and now, as cheap as possible' infrastructure around here that seems to really be coming back to bite people in their asses. Especially with regards to utilities.
Much of that has to do with our unions being ridiculously resistant to change. Senior members fear new technology and techniques that could make them useless. They'd rather do things the way they've been doing them for the past fifty years.

Me too, however classes were called off today due to massive power outages from fallen trees.

Funny story though, I was just talking with one of the air traffic controllers from my airport, and both ends of the airfield have power, but the middle does not.  The control tower is in the middle.  So apparently, all day they've been using a handheld radio and their cell phones to direct traffic.  Now here's the kicker:  we have a mile-long runway, but the handheld has a range of ~2500 feet.  So they've been driving around all day in a pick-up truck trying to get a signal for incoming planes.

Eh? They used a fraction of the power of real lightning, and got >6mA across the heart, plenty to kill you. If you had real lightning, you'd be very well cooked.
So people who have survived lightning hits are aliens or some shit?
Lucky circumstances.
Eighty percent of lightning strike victims survive.

80% are lucky circumstances then. Fact is Mythbusters left out some very important factors (which they do a lot of the time) when testing this myth. Fact lightning (electricity) always finds the path of least resistance. Most victims survive due to being wet making the path of least resistance to be around the body rather then through it.
