PC crashes when playing avi videos recorded with FRAPS

I've been having a few issues with my new pc recently, but the worst is when I play videos I've recorded with FRAPS. At first I recorded at 1024x768 full capture playing Doom 3 on Ultra settings with AF maxed and AA at x2. I was recording at 60 FPS, which is the max on Doom 3 unless you remove the frame cap. Anyways, those videos I could play back fine with no issues. Then I recorded at 1680x1050, and tried to play that back. My PC instantly chugged to about 1 frame a second while flashing black, and I had to restart my PC to resolve the issue. Didn't know what happened, but I played back video at 1280x800 at my PC can play that for a minute or two before it does the same thing. The last time though, the screen turned a grayish orange.

So what's happening here? GPU temp hovers around 35 c at idle, with CPU temp between 30-33 c. Nothing is overclocked, everything is set to default settings. I've attempted to install the latest catalyst driver but their server seems to be having issues.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Mobo: Gigabyte P-55-UD3R
CPU: Intel Core i5-750
GPU: ASUS EAH5770
Ram: Corsair XMS3 4 GB (2x2) DDR3
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower XT 650w

A buddy of mine was telling me to be on the look out for this about a month ago. He sent me a fix, bad part, it's in an email on my gaming system, at another friends house. I'll see if I can get it posted in roughly 12 hours.

ATi's website is up and downloaded one of the drivers. Installed it and my PC is still crashing when playing videos at such high res and size. I'll just have to edit on a different computer in the mean time.

FRAPS records videos uncompressed, hence it takes a ton of computing power to play them...

Maybe you should run them through video software before playing them... Compressing them via a codec

Compressing the videos might solve playback issues, but are you really telling me crashing your computer and flashing from black back to desktop is a normal playback issue? Once I pause the video, it continues this way. Windows even says my display driver has stopped working. The only way to fix this is a hard restart.

That also doesn't solve my PC from severely lagging when motion blur or explosions occur in some games. Dawn of War 2 set my settings to max and it runs at 120+ FPS and even a few explosions takes it down to 10-5 FPS. It didn't do that before.

Decoding video in raw form e.g. fraps, puts stress on your GPU like games do... sounds like overheating issues to me..

Dill13 suggested I use FurMark to test my GPU temp under stress. I used default settings with default fan speeds (auto control), and the max temp I got was 70 c. In the latest test I enabled all the settings except AA. I also adjusted my GPU's fan speed and the fastest speed it begins to spin is at 50 c. GPU temp peaked at 62 c. My CPU peaked at 40 c. Both case fans have always been set to high.

My older GPU reached higher temps more often and never gave me any issues. I don't believe it's overheating.

I still need to figure out about the motion blur thing, but I can do some video editing in the mean time now. Thanks!

Yikes, its been a while since I've used WMP. I was told the newer version in 7 was much better though
