This, lol..

I'd say Canon, cause I'm a Canon shooter..

The best advice would be to go to the store and ask if you can play around with the cameras. Whatever feels more comfortable..

Im partial to Canon. Ive used some lower end Nikons, but although the small size is nice, they cramp my hand cause theyre so small. Never used an XSi so I dont know if the size is similar

I looking into getting myself a DSLR also. I really want a Canon EOS 50D but I'm finding it hard to justify the cost. Might go 500D instead.

This website is good for reviewing and comparing models:

Another good website for excellent reviews on Canon gear is http://www.the-digital-picture.com/

And for what it's worth, the ergonomic difference alone is enough to get the 50D (a few years ago I went from the 350D to the 40D)

Buy one of each ... or just the superior Nikon

When we were buying ours (went with Nikon), I seem to remember that one was better for sports-like shots and one was better for stills. I think the Canon was better for the former and the Nikon for the latter, IIRC.

Base it on what you plan to use it for.

Try before you buy....

I had an open mind to whether I went Cannon or Nikon with my first DSLR, tried out the 2 contenders, the Nikon (D60) felt nicer in my hand so I went for that.

At mid level there won't be much difference to a first time user like I was and you are.

One of the camera dudes can probably explain it better than I can.

But I'll try.

The Canon is better for motion shots (sporting events, action, etc). The Nikon better for stills (landscapes, portraits, and such). I think it's based on the imaging technology used.

Thus, if you're going to be using it for taking pictures of the kids' football games, go with the Canon. If you're going to be doing more artistic stuff, got with the Nikon.

I think.
