Here's an example of an Austrian police car. They use just about anything from VW, however. I've even seen a VW Beetle and a Smart Fortwo with the Austrian police livery doing patrols around the Parliament building.

Polizia is the actual police, you know the usual stuff taht all police around the world do.
The Carabinieri are a Gendarmerie corp, so they do police duty plus they are military units, so you see them in Rome and then at the same time doing duty in Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
So also their uniforms are more military oriented, and yes those are regular everyday duty uniforms.
