Okay, so these weird little dots...what gives? Aside from those, I get flickering/distorted/color scrambling smoke effects and other small graphical glitches.

My specs...

ATI Radeon 9600XT 128 MB DDR/Latest Catalyst drivers version 6.3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ MMX-3DNow~1.8 Ghz
DirectX version~9.0c
1 Gig RAM

My BIOS are all set to default speed, all ingame setting and driver settings are as low as they can go, color depth is 16 bit, and my res is 1024 x 768. I can't see what is causing this. My GFX card is only about 2 years old. Help, please?

why isnt the color quality @ 32 bit for ur desktop?

change it to 32 and see if it helps.
check ur card to make sure its not dusty.
ive seen stuff like that happen right before cards go bad. U need a new one anyway....

Had that same thing on 256Meg 9600xt card. It was the card, sent it back got a new one and works fine.

Heat or not enough power from your power supply. I have a 9600 XT with 256 and don't have that problem. I have a 350W power supply. barely enough to run it, but it does work. So check you power supply output.

I had a similar problem on a 9600 and it turned out to be the heat spreader not making contact properly. I put some arctic paste under it after cleaning the old stuff off and cleaned the fan and it was fine afterwards. The card only used to do it under heavy load e.g bf2 or 3dmark. Course you have to consider it may be going duff but try the heat thing first.

I had artic paste applied a while ago. It's quite a bit dusty inside my case, including on the vid card. You're saying that if I re-set it in its holder and dust my case out, the problems should stop?

Definitely clean out the dust bunnies, dust can really insulate the heat produced by the rig's processes. If its two years old then you probably should clean it off, remove the fan and processor (be careful if you do this) and apply a new layer of paste. If you choose not to remove the fan etc (i'm a noob never done it myself) consider another case fan? It made a world of difference for me to add another fan.

Did you overclock your card? If so then clean it up/add a fan and see if there is a difference. If you did OC then bring it down a few mhz. IMHO the artifacts you are getting is from overheating.

Well, I myself don't have the paste to do it myself, and the old paste is only about 5 months old. I can dust out the dust bunnies and stuff though.

I found this on newegg. Is it a good deal? If so, I can just buy that and solve ALL my graphics problems.

IMHO thats a good temporary card. I run a nvidia PNY 6600 256MB as a "temporary card" (lol who am I kidding, I'm gonna run that card to the ground) and it runs fine. In fact all my rig specs cept for the RAM is lower than yours and I haven't experienced any major issues. Just keep it clean and cool and all will be good. For that price I think its a fine deal. GL!
