GF's Laptop crashhhh

Okay so im trying to fix my gfs laptop which is actually my old laptop.

It wont load windows;

I get the common "windows didnt shut down correctly ... how to you want to proceed"

and my options are

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode/command prompt
last known good config
start windows normally

Unusually though, NONE of the options work. When i try normally, last known, safe mode - it all does the same thing, it will proceed for about 5 seconds then a BLUE screen of death will flash for about 1 second (unreadably fast) and the computer will restart.

I tried loading the default settings for the BIOS, however that did not work.

So i dont really know where to proceed from here. She is histerical about losing the pictures she has on that harddrive.

Does this sound like a hardware failure or a software failure?

What would you try?

when you do get the blue screen, there's a reason listed followed by a hex number - "0x000007d" or something.

please post the reason, and the last two letters/numbers "7d"

Well the screen flashs very fast. let me try a couple times to get it...

ok after trying, it literally flashes for less than the blink of an eye. impossible to read =\

oh, it's set to reboot - try hitting the scroll lock key - i don't remember if it will stop it, but worth a try . . .

i read in another forum with a similar prob someone suggested to run a live disc such as knoppix linux which will allow me to access the files to back them up. then i will just reformat it.

there is an option in Windows XP which allows u to display the blue screen instead of the just displaying it for a second ...

do this to get a pic of the blue screen or wut it says
if you are using WindowsXP, right click on my computer > Properties > Select the 'Advanced' tab > and under 'startup and recovery' click the 'settings' button. This will open a new window, and under the 'System Failure' heading, uncheck 'Automatically restart.'

so when the blue screen appears next time it wont automatically restart it will let u view the message... then after u find the message number just google the code and see wut it says...

He's not going to be able to do this, because he can't get into windows, duhh.

But you can select an advanced boot option by pressing F8 when selecting safe mode, and disable automatic restarting from there.

I have a $20 IDE/SATA to USB adapter for these situations. Remove the laptop HD, plug into into my USB converter thingy, and plug that into a working PC. You can run virus scans, checkdisk, and copy any files you need to recover. It's the best $20 I've ever spent (On computer shit that is).

There are lots to choose from
