Need a powerful wireless router

Okay, right now I have a Linksys WRT54GL. While it's a reliable router, it doesn't have the best range.

What are some good, reliable and powerful wireless routers? By powerful I mean one with a long range, powerful transmit strength, whatever.

If you can, DDWRT it, I use to disconnect all the time with it before I DDWRT now I never disconnect and I get the speed I was getting when I was hooked up to the modem via ethernet cable

Rather than buying a whole new router, maybe consider some kind of booster/bridge setup?

Worked for me. I used a spare router and stuck it in my room via a 20m Ethernet cable. Sort of like a switch, except I got my own WAP out of it.

Are you kidding? The WRT54GL is as powerful as you can legally get a router. Just load it up with Tomato or DD-WRT and boost the power. If that fails, buy some bigger antennas.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

i used Tomato to turn one into an AP.

Never seen a 16port modem/router combo.

Edit: My house is CAT5e wired-hence the need for a big switch.

Not to mention the shit my ISP hands out usually fails <1 year.

All I know is I'm sitting here right now, and half the time my Xbox 360 can't connect to the network. My laptop gets an OK signal though.

My dream would be to get the house wired with CAT-5 but that'll never happen, too expensive.

edit: I have Tomato on mine right now and I have the antenna transmit power boosted up.

If that's the case, your problem isn't the router, but rather the Xbox. It can't transmit with enough power.

i wired mine - sorry, i wired the basement in mine myself. i have all the rooms coming into under the stairs, where i have a switch. from there i ran a patch cable into my den, where the outside access gets split up.

i finished my basement, meaning i ran the cable, phone, ethernet, and power to all the rooms. fuck me, i shoulda been on the builders ass to wire my upstairs too, the fucker wouldn't let me do sweat equity to close the house.

you can do somethings to a pre-existing home too, but it's a helluva lot easier in the building phase . . .

Yeah, I'm ok with power tools but I'd rather not risk screwing up my mom's house in order to wire it. I'd rather just pay an electrician to do a good and proper job of it, complete with jack plates etc.

My house has a basement, first floor, second floor and attic. The modem and router are on the second floor, on the west side of the house. My 360 is on the first floor of the house, on the east side. I assume the 360's wireless adapter sucks balls, because my Mac does very well on Speedtest and Pingtest. I'd rather not do such an involved project myself.

you can do a near professional job if you knew the layout. but with wireless (which i assume your after) it's more cost effective to get the second router, and turn it into the AP. google Tomato, it's surprisingly easy to flash the firmware and go into the options to make an AP.
