Overclocking the 930

Hi guys

Its been almost 2 years since my last post here.

I just built a new rig, 5870 CF, 930, V8 Cooler, 6G OCZ 1600C7, TJ09, 1 TB, 27" ladidadida

I'm new in the overclocking business but I kind of know what to do.

Running Prime 95 for after 25 minutes, I get max load 75/73/71/71

Idle is 42. Ambient with AC @ 23 degrees celcius

I'm at 160 x 22 @ 1.216 V with my V8 at Full load (Default V8 Thermal paste), the temps seem a bit high eh?

Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Edit: after 30 minutes, thier about 74/71/69/69. Still a bit too high for though right?

Have a higher BLK so try 180x20. See what happens then.

Wow! It works, why is that? I siwtched it to 175 x 20 so its 3.6ghz. Idle is at 38, even dips down to 35. Why is that?

a higher multiplier has a bigger effect on temps than base clock.

I could probably try and explain why but I'd probably end up confusing myself, just best to remember to always do it that way round - try keep the multiplier at 20, or 21.

Lower multipliers are also usually more stable.

Yeah I think so.

So like 175x20 would be 'better' than 160x22 which both give ~3.50GHz

I think...

Fuck, I'm doubting myself now :S

Hmm, I might try this then.. My E5200 gets really hot (75 deg+) on 256 x 12.5.

Lower multiplier needs usually more Vcore. And with i7 odd multiliers usually need less vcore than even multipliers. I use 21x because it actually needs less vcore than 20x.

If you have same frequenzy, there are two ways to get there. one is higher multiplier with less QPI bus speed, one is the exact other way. More BCLK, the more stress for motherboard and CPU bus, does give additional but very marginal performance boost, but doesn't come for free.

As far as the odd multipliers go, only god(Intel) knows why.

Obviously both have their benefits but I think the key is to get a balance between then to achieve optimal performance.

160 x 22 like in the OP seemed too much skewed towards the multiplier, and has he reported, worked better with a more balanced ratio of 175 x 20.
