I am looking to pick up some sort of decent quality audio system for under $400. It gets a little complicated because I need some sort of studio monitor for guitar practice (I use a floor pod, so my amp is no longer usable).

However, I also want to be able to enjoy music on the system as well, so I don't want to get any studio monitors that are too "microscope-ish"

I found the M-Audio BX8a for $370 at amazon and had heard they have better bass then many studio monitors because of there larger size etc., so might be better for just enjoying music.

So, would I be better off grabbing the BX8a's, Or getting a pair of AV40's for guitar, and using the rest for a pair of bookshelf speakers or something of the sort?

The first problem is that you're looking for two different things. A sound system and an amplifier.

The BXs are a great system, I cannot recomment M-Audio enough. However, I don't know how well they'd perform in the amp role. For that, you'd e better off getting a dedicated amp. I have a friend who uses a couple of Marshall amps in a setup similar to what you want; guitar and then hooked up to a stereo to play music. However, the design isn't optimised forthe latter, so he gets funny music sounds.

Basically, get two different systems. You'll enjoy the dedicated design. You could always move down to the AV40s in order to free up some cash to get a guitar amp.

if you really want it to be one set-up, then I suggest looking at the Digidesign Eleven and monitors (i'm partial to Focal Twin6 Be monitors).
I know, it's kinda pricy but, it'll do everything you want it to...

Thanks for the input on the BXs. The issue for me with using an amp is that where I play, the mikes really up the gain, so I have to go directly into the PA system. Because of this, I practice without an amp so my sound is the same in practice as in peformance. My brothers AV40's work well for this, but clearly I can't keep using his.

I will probably grab the BX8as if no one else has input.

Someone isn't doing their job right. Where do you mainly play?
e: Either way, you're still going to need some sort of interface... you weren't planning on just plugging your guitar into the speakers, were you??!??

Just at my church (which is large, about two thousand people per service). But yes, the audio people are incapable of producing a decent mix of the instruments and completely unwilling to listen to input. So my hands are tied with what I do amplification.

Yea.

I've mixed for a 1100 seat church... full amp rigs, uncaged drums, the works.
What DI are you using then?

Ah. I recommend the Countryman Type 85 DI. It'll run off a 9V battery or Phantom power.

1. Get BXs
2. Have a serious talk with the audio people, or their boss. Bad users shouldn't force you to adapt your hardware. If you have to, go into the booth and change the settings yourself (using glue if needed). You really should be able to use a miced amp, that's by far the best sound.
