So the Platonic conception of a religion based in pragmatic concerns to function as a socializing agent in a city of speech is a rather confusing premise. He at once defames the gods of Homer and Hesiod as ill representations, arguing that only good can issue from them, and that they are completely immutable and desirous (meaning they are uninterested in humanity, by extension), and yet then comes back with a "noble lie" promoting a myth in which all men are born of the earth (one of the gods). Now, if gods cna only produce good, and we're talking about religion in a dialogue concerned with justice and its desirability in place of injustice (which means men can be either good or bad), then how can the gods have produced us? And how do his two conflicting depictions of the gods function at all? Fuck me, Plato. What the hell are you trying to say?
