My mum wants to get a DSLR camera this summer and she seems fixed on Nikon.

Camera:

D3000

Lenses:

AF-S DX 18-55 II F3.5-5.6 G ED
DX VR 55-200 F4-5.6G IF-ED

(Both Nikkor)

Any other suggestions or does this sound alright for a casual photographer?

...erm...What will she be using it for? If it's very casual (family, outings, whatever), she could probably scrap the 55-200 to save money, since she probably won't need the zoom.

That plus some nature stuff so the 55-200mm lens will come in handy for birds/other animals.

Get a D70 or D80 instead, second hand. Superior camera, inc built in motor so will work with none AF-S lenses.

I have a D70.

If new, you really need a D90 or better.

My buddy got a T1i a few months ago. It's a nice camera as well. Shoots HD video.
The T2i is about to be released and the T1i will probably drop in price.

You sure? Maybe second-hand, but I don't think new it'll drop much.

I bought my XS on sale a year and 4 months ago for $550 after taxes, you'd be pretty lucky to find a similarly low price now, they still go for $600+taxes.

You can get an XS with a lens now for $499. For $600 you can probably find the superior T1i (Body).

Yeah, the T2i should cause the T1i to drop in price. Camera shops and big electronics retailers that carry the cameras shouuuuuuuuld cut the prices to clear the old stock etc. My uni's photography club picked up a bunch of slightly old clearance Nikons.
