Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

I've been getting this error message a lot in games. It happens a few times when I'm playing bf2, occasionally when I play bioshock 2, and never when I play call of duty 1. I'm on a fresh install of windows 7 and have the most recent graphics card drivers. I thought maybe my card was getting too hot so I upped the fan speed and checked my temps, they never went above 80°C. What could this be?

E6750 @ 3.2GHz
2GB DDR2-800
9800GT
X-Fi XtremeGamer
575w Antec psu
Windows 7 32-bit

you're not alone... there are at least a hundred posts on the microsoft forums with people having the same problems. there doesn't seem to be any specific cause, so you're going to have a hard time diagnosing. the important part will be figuring out if it's a windows (software) issue or a hardware issue. do you have an older card laying around you can try?

Nope. My card was working fine back when I was using xp 32-bit. I've googled quite a bit and saw a bunch of other problems like mine. Was wondering if maybe someone had found a hotfix or something.

I had this. The only way I was able to stop this from happening was uninstalling the drivers and restart the computer and let windows "find new hardware" and install it for me.

Won't this just load windows' basic vga drivers?

no... what would make you think that? it will detect your video card and install whatever windows considers the latest driver package. generally you want to use manufacturer provided drivers, but they aren't always stable in windows, hence your problem. let windows take care of the driver, and maybe your problem is solved.

I downgraded to XP and this problem is still occuring. It must be a hardware issue then?

This happened to me earlier today, I reinstalled the 196.21 drivers yesterday when I realized the 197.15 drivers that tweakguides.com linked me to wasn't actually able to interface with the nVidia control panel. Up until that one time, I'd never had a problem with the driver stopping responding.
