is it just the socket? eg 775.

On the motherboard spec it will say what families of processor it supports.
and go to the site of the motherboard manufacturer, find the board, and it should have a list of the ones that work with it.

pretty much the socket type determines the processor... but you should always check the processor specs just to be sure.
It physically fits the socket, but some boards may not be able to run all processors, some 775 boards cannot run 45nm 775 CPUs even with a BIOS update.
nm, - whatever that is, this is what i feared. my current one is 65 and the one i want is 45, but i just found my motherboard specs and the processor i want is listed, so it should be fine yes?Sydney wrote:

I had to update my motherboard BIOS to run my Quad 45nm (had Dual 45nm before).
