I wasn't very impressed.  The cinematography was incomparable to Band Of Brothers, the first episode was ridiculously slow and there wasn't much of an 'awe factor' in general.  I really can't get around the idea that the whole production seemed far too clean, especially in regards to video quality.  I'm hopeful that it will turn around but so far it's too over-the-top dramatic and long-winded for my liking.  I did enjoy the shot of them landing with the Naval fleet in the background though, I think that was really the highlight of the first episode.
Well i was expecting the first episode to be kind of slow since the first episode of BoB had no action at all.
Contrarians are contrarian for contrarianisms sake.

try saying that five times fast

The first BOB, as you stated had no action whatsoever, so I was a little mystified by little kens comment. I watched it on the web, streaming from fancast so can't say for sure about the film quality but I did get the vibe of the jungle and it all felt right. Authentic.

I loved the way they showed how the japs would lay back and hide and try and kill the medics first before they did some sort of assault.
I suspect that later in the series you will not see medics wearing red crosses, lulz.

btw, my great uncle was named Leatham Jenson. He died in Daubantham ( unsure of spelling ), a prisoner of war camp in the Pacific. He was a naval aviator and was shot down. It still makes me shudder when I read the accounts of the japs selecting prisoners to be eaten.

They were dirty bastards, and we did the world a favor by nuking them and kicking germany in the nuts. Murderous barbarians.

It may be pointless to try to establish which World War Two Axis aggressor, Germany or Japan, was the more brutal to the peoples it victimised. The Germans killed six million Jews and 20 million Russians [i.e. Soviet citizens]; the Japanese slaughtered as many as 30 million Filipinos, Malays, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Indonesians and Burmese, at least 23 million of them ethnic Chinese. Both nations looted the countries they conquered on a monumental scale, though Japan plundered more, over a longer period, than the Nazis. Both conquerors enslaved millions and exploited them as forced labourers—and, in the case of the Japanese, as [forced] prostitutes for front-line troops. If you were a Nazi prisoner of war from Britain, America, Australia, New Zealand or Canada (but not Russia) you faced a 4% chance of not surviving the war; [by comparison] the death rate for Allied POWs held by the Japanese was nearly 30%
motherfuckers.

I'm not a contrarian for contrarian's sake.  I really want this series to be as good as BoB, even thouh I don't think the storytelling can match Stephen Ambrose's.
I guess I would rather it have no backstory really.  I didn't care for the first episode of BoB either.  I want action action action!

I'd imagine that watching it streaming on the web would actually make the cinematography better.  Saving Private Ryan and BoB both had a gritty video quality that did wonders for series and I guess that's what I was disappointed in.  It made it seem far more realistic and made it easier for me to get engrossed in the story.

Should be torrentable very soon

ATG, are you talking about the first episode? They didn't show the Japs focusing on the medics if I recall correctly.

No, he was blown to bits by the freaking squad because one idiot opened up when the medic was coming back from a piss and didn't warn anybody of his arrival, so everybody started shooting.

Poor guy!

Are we talking about the same part though? Episode 1, when they're sitting in the rain?

This, generally.

It picked up a bit in the second episode, but in just these two there was an alarmingly high number of shots just pointing at one dude's face while he's staring off in one direction. I want it to be like BoB, but it just can't be with three people that I'm still struggling to identify from everyone else due to the lack of any real introduction.

I think the reason people arent enjoying these as much so far is because of the way the japanese fought.  So far, they've been attacking at night in massive suicidal waves and the marines were just repelling them.  In BoB, it was a mix of the army attacking the germans and vice versa for certain strategic positions.  You got more up close and personal with the german soldiers in my opinion, which made the battles more immerseive.  So far in The Pacific, it seems kind of like playing nazi zombies: hold of waves of enemies at night, chill during the day, repel at night, chill during the day.

Not that I'm thinking its been bad at all so far, rather the fighting style is just different

Mmmh This isn't kicking in like BOB yet. Gonna watch the rest of the series until I make a final judgement on it.

ed. Oh, and agree 100% with Ken and Desert a few posts up. Hard to tell who's who, who died, who survived, who lost it, who this who that due to the lack of introduction. Maybe this is supposed to be seen as a "big picture" instead of individuals? I dunno... Messy so far.

Honestly? It blew a jungleful. I'm joking, only joking. Actually, it
is not up to "Band of Brothers" and I have my reasons. 1) Lose the
narration from Hanks. 2) Where's the story ala 101st Airborne in
Europe? 3) The moralizing of one of the characters g...oing through a dead
Japanese soldiers' effects is based on what true life event actually?
In other words, "Band of Brothers" was history."The Pacific" is
story-telling. I don't like that. No sir.
