New Yawk Trains

So I'm going home tomorrow and will be riding a series of trains from New Haven to JFK. Is there anything I need to know about riding on the New York subway system or on the LIRR? Is there any possibility of unexpected delays on those?

Also, should I walk from Grand Central to Penn Station, or should I take the subway?

(For reference, my route is Metro North to Grand Central, subway/walking to Penn Station, LIRR to Jamaica, and then Air Trans to JFK.)

Take a cab to Penn. Taking the subway requires a changeover in Times Square which isn't all that much of a pain but is a bit time consuming. It's also a rather long walk.

The LIRR will be quicker. You can take the train to Jamaica Station and then there is a monorail that takes you from Jamaica to JFK.

It just means that you have to switch from one subway to another at Times Square to get to Penn. It's not a direct connection because GCS is on the east side, Penn is on the west side. Subways generally run north-south. The change takes place within the station so you wouldn't have to pay for another fare but it's underground and kind of confusing if you've never done it before.

Cab would be about $5-6 and much less of a headache + quicker.

The 4 and 5 trains are subway lines.

Ended going with walking from Grand Central to Penn Station, which was a wonderful idea. It let me see the city the best, and wasn't a difficult walk at all. the route worked like a charm, though it was a bit disconcerting getting off at a station in the middle of the ghetto (Jamaica).

Okay, so I make the return journey tomorrow, and will need to get from Penn Station to Grand Central at 10 or 11 in the evening. Are the streets of midtown-Manhattan safe during that hour? I'd prefer to walk, because it's free, but will take a cab or the subway if necessary. I've heard bad things about subway safety in the night, too. Would the 1 line from Penn Station to Times Square and Shuttle line to Grand Central be safe at those hours?

Yeah they're almost always busy. Well most anyway. I would take the cab though. It will be raining tomorrow evening.

Okay, I think I'll take the subway or walk, depending on how hard it's raining. Which subway station do I use if I'm going that route? I heard Penn Station is not directly connected to the subway system.

I was more concerned on the Jamaica station because it was mostly abandoned, while the subway stations were all crowded with people. I saw black people in both places, but wasn't scared because they were black. Sketchy people or thugs look like sketchy people or thugs regardless of their race, and it was certainly the last factor I used in judging whether or not I should keep an eye on them. In any case, one needs to be more aware when there aren't many other people around in case they get jumped, which was the underlying reason for the disparity mentioned above. I'm sure if you weren't from a large city and had never been in a mass transit system at night before, you would understand; as it is, you should stop attempting to gain a sense of self-satisfaction when the potential really doesn't exist.
