I know a lot of people coming from the schools around here that wouldnt have made it to a decent university without a chance for that recognition being a student athlete gave em.   fass, i never mentioned anything about going pro.  teachers salaries are the responsibilities of the admin and the unions.  please dont deny that their priorities fall on their own salaries before they think about curriculum.

I never played sports in high school my self but to see such adament opinions against these programs here is a bit surprising. then again, maybe its not.

It's not against these programs, but when funding schools that needs to be secondary. Also I'm sure that money wouldn't be dropped, it would just become the responsibility of the parents(which I'm sure would actually cover it)..

I was bringing up the pro thing because it happens to alot of high school footballers, they get special treatment. Then they go to university and they drop out cause of the grades not being up to par. Happened alot in my high school cause we had a really long winning record. I think it was 5 years without a loss, and those kids were treated like gods.

I wasnt even thinking about pro sports.  I was thinking about my army buddy's little brother.  Went to a high school down the streets with some of the worst scores in california.  he came out with great grades.  he was also part of the school track team.  if he had not been such an able athelet as well as an outstanding student, he wouldnt have been accepted to west point where he is now.  he had no political connections.  it was his ability at track is what opened the door for him.

That's so rare though that it's not really worth spending the money.

Plus track isn't a drain on the funds. It's when high school kids are getting gear bought for them every year it becomes an huge expense.

In our school, the funds to purchase new uniforms came directly from the ticket sales.

It's really not an argument.

Your buddy got into west point cause he's fast. Maybe 3-4 other kids could have gotten into collage if they had gotten a better education?

There happy now.

Sports is pretty much the only reason I went to class in high school
Where you good at sports and not very good at your education?

I'm just asking, cause the sport thing does bring alot of perks in the school system.

Education is also way more important then sports, because it's used later in life by more people then anything else.

P.S. I do however agree with you that teachers and everyone in government work right now needs to take a pay cut. Stop giving out inflation increases if you don't have, I'm more and more realizing that one of the biggest reason for inflation in this world is government jobs.
I was good at sports and incredibly bored in school. I'm not dumb, I pretty much aced every test I took in grade school without studying and that's probably why I was bored.

I was captain of the football and wrestling teams, all conference in the former and all county in the latter. I played lacrosse in the spring. Knowing that I had to go to practice after school in order to qualify to play in games is what motivated me to actually bother showing up at all.

Clearly the problem is that your education is government funded, get some wholesome honest for-profit private corporations in to educate your children

Most sports programs have their equipment come out of a separate budget. Whether it's via running a candy/soda machine at school, charging admission to the homecoming dance, parents donating money to help out the team or sporting goods manufacturers cutting sweetheart deals with the programs they're usually only minimally, if at all, from school taxes.

They didnt provide equipment at my school... To play basketball each player on the team had to pay $500 (we travelled a lot), track was around $100 and XC about $50.

Its ridiculous that you would cut sports, keeping school morale up is extremely important.  Lower the ridiculous teacher salaries and pensions before doing anything else.

And that's good, but there is also a large part funded by taxes. They build a weightroom that was for the whole school(if you were in sports. Wink wink) when I was in high school.

I'm really not against sports in school and I think that it's good for some. Ehh I'm just going to say it, we're really fucked as a country..

They're going to cut services and raise taxes, which in turn is going to push more people in foreclosures. Which in turn is going to make them cut services and raise taxes. What can be done to save our country at this point?

I also stated above that we should cut all government worker salaries and pensions because they are really the route of inflation.
A Sit in is not going to do it.

What the hell is school morale? Are you suggesting the entire school is going to have better grades because the football team is on a winning streak?

When students have extracurriculars and things to connect themselves with the school, they will do better.  School pride and everything?  You must have gone to a pretty lame school...
Whenever our sports teams did well the entire school was excited and was active.  More interest in school = better grades. Simple as that.

Simple. Rescind Executive Order 10925. Abolish all public servant unions.

I went to Bayonne High School. We had Tennis courts, an ice rink, a pool, a large stadium, and an indoor basketball court as well an entire wing of the school used for art classes. Hell one kid, Kenny Brit, is in Pro football plays for the Tennessee Titans. It still didn't make a difference on grades. Student motivation was completely independent of how our sports teams were doing or how we could take a period to go skating around.

At hurricane. There's two reasons parents don't give a shit.
1. They should have never had the child to begin with, either because of religious or financial gain.
2. They just don't have time, it's next to imposable to raise a kid when you're working two jobs to pay for the schools.

Sometimes it's the extreme in the other direction. As much as I've seen parents who didn't give a fuck about their kids, I have seen parents who are fine "As long as he/she is happy that's all that matters". So the kids ends up dropping out of school or becoming a coke head because its 'as long as their happy".

Sucky school then.  I`d hate to go to a high school with no pride or school spirit.

1) yes

2) Then send them to public school? If you're planning on having kids you should either have enough money to not only send them to private school but also be a good parent, or live in an area with decent public schools so that you can be a good parent

Then we wouldn't have the population? Which is pretty much what's happening now, our middle class is strugling and paying for the rich and the poor, so the population is going down.
