Role of the M2/3 Bradley in Iraq (Desert storm to the Iraq war)
Weight: 30.4 Tonnes
Developed in: USA
Manufacturer: BAE sytems
Capacity: 3 operator’s, 6 passengers.
Armament: 7 Tube launched Optically sighted Wire guided missiles (TOW’s) + 1 m242 25mm chain gun, however the 30 mm was incorporated more recently.
The M2 bradley has been credited with various accomplishments in the Middle Eastern Theatre. It was developed because of a military request for a quick, light APC+IFV that could keep pace with an M1A2 Abrams. When the gulf war began, American troops were transported into combat by the linebackers. It basically served as an armored escort for the Abrams, and was considered more reliable than an LAV-25. It was famous for being able to take powerful direct hits from explosives and RPG’s without being destroyed. The US army credited it with more Armor kills than the M1 Abrams was able to log. In fact, the desert theatre was where it played its most important roles, anti-armour and armour support. Despite having drawbacks, for example, it’s dealy TOW’s can only be launched if the vehicle is stationary, the Bradley M2/3 proved quite capable.
Its armour allowed it to take hits that would’ve razed an LAV-25, Stryker, or HMMWV. However, it could be crippled, but many lives were saved because the vehicle could hold it’s own against explosives. Sadly, the large majority of destroyed Bradley’s was because of friendly fire. It was utilized in counter-tank roles, against t-72’s and other tanks, and ferried troops around hot zones. Another flaw of the Bradley was that it’s fuel was stored in the center of the vehicle, meaning an enemy with an RPG and a good aim could devastate a Bradley. However, the bradley’s performed quite well as BMP-30 destroyers.
The production model was the M2. The new M3, and the M2/3 A1 updated vehicles now carry more updated TOW’s and better armour. Many modification’s have been made, and the Bradley Linebacker has been outfitted with many different roles. The most advanced model, the M6, is the one featured in BF2. It has stinger missiles, and the 25mm cannon. The Bradley can be modified to be an amphibious vehicle.
Sorry for the error, the m6 linebacker is the AA variant.
This is just a guide on what roles the Bradley Linebacker played in the Gulf Wars. It's a basic overview, and not too specific.. Hope it satisfies your curiosity!
P.S. Hello to that group of trolls summoned from hell to be my personal tormentors, how are you all doing? CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS ONLY.
