Oh in response to your karma, I have no idea about netbooks, but the EEE PC is widely recommended.. look into that.
I prefer the Rusty Trombone.

College dorms are small. Get a small case. I am a fan of the A05NB myself, will still fit all of your hardware, while taking less space.

Build away.

For both, or just the desktop?Poseidon wrote:

My dad's gonna get me the laptop like he did with my brother. This is on my own money. So $2500 for the desktop.Bevo wrote:

Thats a hugeass budget. Do you have room for 2 monitors? Do you want 2 monitors?Poseidon wrote:

I'd say slap a 24"
i7 930
Asus P6TD Deluxe
6GB G.skill DDR3 1800mhz ram
ATI 5870
Megahelms <3
Fans
800 watt psu (corsair or coolermasters)
HDDs (your choice really)
Mice +Keyboard
Headsets
well that's why I was asking. I live in an apartment off campus and have a decent sized desk and can fit 2 24s on it, but especially if he's going to be in a dorm or has an old monitor it changes things..Cybargs wrote:

At that price you could Crossfire 5850s
I was toying around in newegg and had this up, but I figured it doesn't make much sense. There's not really anything out there right now that warrants crossfired 5850s. I think it's smarter to stick with a single 5870 or 5850 for now and grab another one a year or two in the future when the price goes down and the hardware requirements go up.Narupug wrote:

My build looks a lot like finrays so Im not really going to bother posting it. I don't know why you wouldn't go with 8g RAM though.
I have a 226BW. Is it worth it to upgrade or should I just stick with this one?Bevo wrote:

K so. I've always had Nvidia cards and I've been out of the tech loop for atleast a year. Should I get the GTX 480 (it has tesselation? wut) or the 5970?
5970 without a doubt.Poseidon wrote:

So it's worth the $150 price difference?
why...

EE (hats
It's basically two 5870s (admittedly underclocked a bit) put together. If you can afford it, it's the best card on the market atm.Poseidon wrote:

Here's what I've got so far:
Anything I should change? I wasn't really sure about the mobo so I just went with something that had very good reviews...again, I've been out of the loop for a while now.

I wouldn't get the VelociRaptor - at that price you could get an SSD.
Also, I think the G19 is a little overkill.

do you really need a laptop? two years at uni now and no-one i know with a desktop uses their laptop for anything more than iplayer in bed. when it comes for note-taking, you really can't beat pen and paper.

HAF is nice (I own one) but it gets a fuckton of dust in it. The top part is mesh with holes big enough for dust to just pass right through it.Poseidon wrote:

Better case: corsair obsidian 800d
proc: get the 930
ram: I prefer OCZ, I've had terrible luck with Dominator ram
cooler: noctua
hDD: I have that same one and love it. You might consider the 600gb one
