I switched to FiOS today and I'm having some serious issues with this computer now. While I can download/upload at normal speeds with programs like limewire and bittorrent, my internet browsing with both Firefox (which I primarily use) and IE, including downloads initiated with either, has slowed to a crawl. It's worse than I remember 14.4 modems being when it comes to loading web pages. I'm talking 10 minutes minimum, if they load at all.

The problem seems to be isolated to this desktop computer as the laptop also on the network appears to run at normal speed. This computer is running XP, the laptop is running Vista. I had no problems before today on this computer. It's not an issue of disk space or RAM and it's not an issue with the CAT V cables either as I've used four of them and they all worked normally with the laptop. I've also tried all the ports on the new surfboard modem as well with the same results.

So... I've really isolated the problem down to the browsers on this computer themselves and I can't for the life of me think of anything else to check with them. I've been ripping out my hair for the last six hours since it was installed and I even have the Verizon people sending out someone again tomorrow to see if they can troubleshoot the problem

Any help is much appreciated in advance

did you make any custom settings in the browsers regarding proxies or dns services on that system?

No, all of that is default.

Stupid suggestion: Clear your temporary files?

I vaguely remember having some fruity problems with my ip auto assign at some point which screwed things up.
I think I went over to locked ip on the pc and modem.

I went out and bought a new NIC card because the higher speed internet thrashed the buffers in my onboard NIC. I'm running 15.41Mb/s dl, 9.11Mb/s ul

Wow, what motherboard did you have? That is pretty pitiful, maybe if you updated your drivers?

Verizon FiOS. $84.99 a month for phone, internet and TV.

You won't be living on campus?

Hmmm not bad

Planning to go to CUNY, but I will be finding my own place ASAP with my gf.

Only options here are Time Warner Cable or Verizon FiOS (or the satellite services too I guess). I just dumped TWC for FiOS yesterday and I'm much happier with the picture quality, the fact that I don't have an IP phone dependent on power/internet and the internet is faster (after I replaced the NIC card).
