True, I heard that the ban isn't exactly enforced on a consistent basis in Dublin even.

Well, I'm not denying that.  I also can't deny that I disagree with much of the collectivist mindset that people seem to develop in highly urban areas.

I think a certain amount of collectivism is practical, but it is easy to go overboard with it.

Granted, I don't like the other extreme either.  We have to find a happy medium one way or the other.

Since you won't read Hayek, might I suggest Economic Facts and Fallacies by Thomas Sowell? He talks a lot about city planning in particular in the book and central planning at large.

I'm not against reading Hayek.  I just don't particularly care for the basis of many of his ideas.  I'll look into that book and Sowell's though....

I don't mind that. I don't want to smell cigarette smoke when I'm eating either, nor do I want to walk out of a bar reeking of it. If I'm in 'mixed company' I always make sure that I'm downwind of everyone else. It's just courtesy.

ya smoke around kids? If ya don't, why not? After all you do not feel you are harming them.

This is a touchy area for me and my core beliefs of freedom in society. I guess I have to fall on the side of non-smokers however. You should have the right to smoke sure, but that right is absolutely trumped by the non-smokers right to not breathe your smoke or smell like you.

Back on the OP, I personally think it an absolutely OK idea to raise taxes on unhealthy food, including fast food, so long as that means that healthier food comes down in price.

If supply is constant, healthier food prices would raise due to an increase in demand.

Well if you start taxing unhealthy food, you're going to have to start enforcing that. So same as the Smoking and drinking thing, the revenue stream will be reduced by redundancy in the system.

It's funny though how the smoking tax goes through the roof and everyone got fat. Which IMO fat people are a way bigger strain on the medical world then smokers ever were.

Also at lowing, personal choice would be a better option give smokers a chance to go to bars that allow smoking instead of making them go out side where the children are..

Edit; I actually like the smoking ban, for the fact that it gives a chance to be sociable outside without loud music or tons of talking in a crowded bar.

I am addicted, there's no denying it. I've been smoking for over a decade and the longest I've quit during that time was six months. I'm not 'bitter and angry' about it in the slightest. I enjoy smoking. It calms me down and helps me focus and it's a great way to get five minutes to yourself every hour while at work.

What I am bitter about is sending $1800 a year to Albany and City Hall in taxes just because I happen to be a minority without a voice. It's always easy to pick on the minorities in any society if you hide behind morality.

Oregon doesn't have a sales tax, No one in Oregon wants a sales tax either. They have income tax, and now it's been proposed to start taxing soda, gum, chocolate etc. That sounds like a fat tax.

And they try to justify it by pointing at Medicaid costs. THIS is why state run medical care in America is a very very very bad idea.
