Inkjet-like device 'prints' cells right over burns

Inspired by a standard office inkjet printer, U.S. researchers have rigged up a device that can spray skin cells directly onto burn victims, quickly protecting and healing their wounds as an alternative to skin grafts.

"We literally print the cells directly onto the wound," said student Kyle Binder, who helped design the device. "We can put specific cells where they need to go."
Awesome!

I've heard of a lot of amazing projects in progress by the U.S. military for saving lives, just a shame I can't find any new information on the subjects anywhere.

One of them was a sort of heat laser that would put veins and possibly arteries back together.

When can we expect this thing to be fully functional and in most hospitals?

Where do they get the skin cells they use to cover up the wounds? I don't understand how this works.

Binder and colleagues dissolved human skin cells from pieces of skin, separating and purifying the various cell types such as fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

They put them in a nutritious solution to make them multiply and then used a system similar to a multicolor office inkjet printer to apply first a layer of fibroblasts and then a layer of keratinocytes, which form the protective outer layer of skin.
It would help to read.

And ya that does sound awesome!

Yeah he needs to money for the lazy Americans who don't work and live off welfare so he can get more votes in 2012. Not to mention the new healthcare system.

China just invested more row boats to invade Taiwan and bought some Qassam rockets. I'm shitting my pants now.

Really, Bravo? I don't recall the Swiss waging war on foreign soil or invading other countries. Austria doesn't either (only troops on peace keeping missions associated directly with the UN, i.e. blue helmet folks). I don't think Nepal has an army that is getting into other people's business either.

Don't use such words unless you are absolutely sure.

As to the article and funding: You guys do realize that this project is being run by a research institute SEPARATE from the US military? The article says that they are trying to get the US military to buy into it and work with them, but the project itself is entirely private (or at least independent from the budget of the US military). This kind of technology is valuable enough that if it's cost effective it could be used internationally and for other non-military applications. People do get injured just living their lives, it isn't just Arabs hurting and burning people...

Who is fighting were is irrelevant. The original comment was about militaries developing new technologies. The Swiss would still be using rocks instead of the Sig556 if that were the case.

Typo. The 556 is the civilian variant of the 550.
