Someone needs to write a real world facts guide to psychoanalysis so we won't have these kinds of threads popping up.

psychoanalysis is the main 20th century branch of psychology first formally theorized by freud (essentially sets up the idea of the unconscious and the subliminal; dreams; the ego, id, superstructure etc.) and later developed by his swiss protege jung. that's how i understand it. it is a major part of 20th century modernist/post-modernist living, and arguably one of the most influential advancements in human understanding of the modern-era. right up there with marx, darwin, saussure, einstein and nietzsche. together they are probably the biggest intellectual/philosophical names that define our time.
