ok im going over to my computer illiterate friends house to reformat his computer and he has windows xp. hes pretty sure the sticker with his original key is on it so my question is, if i download windows xp integrated with sp3 and it turns out when he bought the computer it came with xp sp2 will his product key work on the sp3 integrated windows? because if at all avoidable i dont wanna have to have him avoid updates to prevent WGA bullshit.

If it doesn't work, use a cracked key. Then when it comes time to activate, call Microsoft and go through the process on your screen. If you end up talking to someone, tell them you're trying to reformat and your key isn't working. They'll ask how many computers the OS has been installed on...tell them only 1. The rep will give you the code that'll complete the activation.

hey one last question, is there an easier way to get drivers? cause i dont know what model computer he has. probly a dell something.

so if i reformat his computer ill need to install a ethernet driver first before i can go online to get the rest of the drivers. will any ethernet driver work?

also he doesnt know if its media center/pro/home so................................................................ do i just burn all 3 .

im pretty sure the key is not interchangable between those, right

It should be written on the sticker afaik.

It'll probably be home unless the box came from an office/commercial setting before he got it....

before you re-install, just run magicjellybean and grab the current key, then use it for reinstall.
