Asus are very reputable, but not for monitors. They have one LCD monitor that is quite popular, but the name escapes me and I cannot find it anymore.

The reputable brands for monitors are: Samsung, Dell, HP, BenQ, Hyundai and LG.

Both LG and Samsung are good for LED and LCD (TN Panels) and Dell and HP are both known for their LCD IPS panels (the ultrasharp from Dell). BenQ sits in between, they are good with LCD and LED.
BenQ or Hyundai in same sentence with good. O.O

This is getting more confusing.

I'll put it out there a bit and ask those who have some free time and are knowledgeable (cause I'm not) about monitors and select what they believe to be the best monitor on this page for a maximum of $300 (AUD).

Thanks in advance.

Ok and so I know I'm getting this right, the best things to look for are 2ms response time, 300 cd/m2, HDMI, 1920x1080, energy saving...

Is there anything else I'm missing here?

Thanks FatherTed.

I have a LED backlight screen. They ask $100 premium for little energy savings and pretty much the same performance.

The panel is still TN so the color sucks and the viewing angle is horrible. Looking at the monitor straight on distorts what little color is on it.
The good aspects is 2ms which looks no difference than my 5ms because it is so god damn fast anyway. The brightness is way too bright my current monitor is even brighter lol. Contrast is 2 million to 1 or something but thats dynamic so it looks no different than 1000:1 static.

I swapped it for an IPS panel at 30". 2560x1600 of awesome rich colors and accuracy with plenty of viewing angle. Even at 30" there is little to no distortion at the edges.

Response time and contrast ratio is so overrated because thats what TN panels are good for. Crappy dynamic contrast and response time that doesn't matter. If they made a panel with 1ms they would advertise that everywhere saying 100% better than 2ms but in reality is only freaking 1ms, like you can even notice. 120hz is something to consider though but no way am I going back to TN panels.

Anything under 5ms you're not going to notice, doesn't have to be 2ms, HDMI is just as good as DVI, and if you want 16:10, IE 1920x1200.

Energy saving only if you're a cheapskate for leccy bills or a tree hugger.

Benq, panel, good? That doesn't compute. While I don't know about the LED backlit ones, I know that most of the CFL based ones use really low-end Chi Mei or AU Optronics panels, that don't exactly look appetizing compared to, say, Samsung.

Asus MS238H
Asus LS221H
BenQ G2222HDL
Acer X243HBMID
BenQ G2420HD
Samsung 2494HS

Go.
The Samsung. Only option.

Whatever you do, don't get the G2420HD. I actually have one of those because it is the cheapest 24" screen on the market, and boy does that show. The picture is God-awful, with some of the worst backlight leaking I've ever seen, very green-ish colour and un-even backlight. The build quality is under all critique, with the outside being not only a finger print magnet, but also a dust magnet, as well as a construction so flexible that you fear tipping it over when you turn it on.

On the inside, Benq are sticking to their traditions. It's filled with only the worst brands of capacitors on the market; Elite, Ltec and Her mei. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trust Her mei, as they specialize in copying the design of quality capacitors to fool service technicians not to replace them.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Hmmm. I nearly went out and bought the BenQ just before but I'm the type of person who follows their feelings and it just didn't "feel" like the right thing to do, not like when I bought my computer parts recently (in my sig).

Maybe I should just forget this LED business and get a quality cfcl LCD, ie. the Samsung.

Ok, so I'm starting to feel quietly confident about this one -- Samsung P2350

Only cons I can tell from reviews and specs are:
1) it doesn't have HDMI (doesn't really bother me tbh);
2) doesn't come with a DVI cable*;
3) some users have reported the stand to be a little wobbly.

Pros:
Full HD
HDCP support
2ms
23"
Great price
It's a Samsung.

*EDIT: apparently it does.
