Hey Techies, I'm planning on upgrading my processor to one of those new core i# ones. My budget is $650.

Current Specs:
Video Card: 4870 1gb
Ram: 4gb DDR2
CPU: e8400 @ 3.0ghz
Mobo: nForce 650i SLi
PSU: 750w

I know I need to replace my Mobo and Ram if I want to get a core i processor, so if you guys could suggest the parts for $650 or less, it'd help me a lot.

Danke.

edit: also, it would be a huge plus if the mobo supported crossfire.

Only one hour away? I drive over 4 hours every time I go to mom's place, 1 hour is not an excuse if you save big bucks.

It's a really good price for that proc.  Probs worth the 1 hour drive.

There it is at newegg for $100 more.

I used to drive an hour each way to work. 1hr to get a good system for a good price is nothing.
Put it into context, you posted this 12 hours ago. Had you left after the post you'd have had a brand CPU 10 hours ago

While X58 and P55 can run either they have to specify if they support SLI as the board manufacturer has to pay Nvidia to allow SLI (unlike Crossfire)

good choice.  I bought the 920 from Microcenter when it was still $200, then saw that one offered like 3 weeks later

what is the actual PSU?  750 watts could be more than enough (for exapmple my Corsair TX750) or it could way over rated and not able to power that system.

Designed for upgrades, the XPS 630 chassis comes with a 750 Watt, 4-rail power supply. The Dell model H750E-01 provides up to 18A on each of its 12V rails, which should be enough for even the most power-hungry graphics cards and Core 2 series processors.

if that's the stickyish stuff thats on the bottom of the cooler, then yes... my AMD 965 came with thermal paste already applied.

I've read reviews that stated getting some Arctic Cooling Thermal Paste is better than stock cooler paste anyway. It's not very expensive.
My last two CPUs also came with paste on the heatsink (both AMD).

stock heatsinks come with shitty thermal paste pre-applied. Most aftermaket heatsinks come with shitty thermal paste in a tube. Some few aftermarket heatsinks come with good thermal paste in a tube. The F7P comes with good thermal paste pre-applied.

tl;dr buy some thermal paste

Well, it's all working, I think.

One minor issue is that I can't boot with the power button. The case LEDs are on, except for the one on the power button. I have to open the case and push the mobo power button to boot. Not a huge issue, but still kind of annoying.

All the cables seem to be plugged in where they should be, with the exception of one, which looks like the USB cables, but is keyed differently. I wouldn't think this was a cabling issue though, because the LEDs are on.
