rofl, yeah.

why the fuck would a rigorous and empirical scientific method work up to 10,000 years, and then suddenly become whack pseudo-science?

you christians are fucked up
well, it's been a few years since I did this in school, but anyway. The carbon-14 method of gauging age is done my measuring the amount of Carbon-14 left in the item. We know how quickly it decreases, and thus we're able to track back to around the time it died. The half-life of carbon-14 (ie the time it takes to half) is 5730 years. It is therefore almost down to a quarter after 10k years, so I think shifty's number of 10k is quite a bit off. Still, the point is there.

To take an easy number, 57300 years from now, the percentage is down to 0.098%, and understandably the gauging becomes more difficult and impossible to get accurate.
You have the technique and half life right but the upper limit is 60,000 years.

The carbon deteriorates into N-14 which escapes the sample so you just have the carbon half life to go by.

It's just too bad Carbon-14 is the only isotope with a half life... facepalm.gif

uranium-238, uranium-235 and potassium-40 have half lives of 1,000,000+ years with many other isotopes that can be dated even longer (zircon crystals have been found at billions of years old).  So unless you want to go to school and actually learn about the process rather than just shout out nonsense, stfu.

You'll generally find that you don't get potassium-40, uranium-238 or uranium 235 in wood. Well done sir!

P.s. Uranium 238's half life is 4.4Ga, U-235 is 0.7Ga P-40 is 1.3Ga and the one commonly used one you forgot is Rubidium-87 which is 47Ga, they are all solely found in rocks though.

im not sure anybody was saying that other elements/isotopes dont have half-lives...

if you could find me traces of a boat built out of uranium-wood, then im sure we'd be well on our way to debunking the bible myth

ay yai yai.  I wasn't talking about the wood ffs.  Ofc they would use Carbon-14 dating on the wood for obvious reasons.  My point was that the limit to half-life dating is not solely 60,000 years.

p.s. I'm aware the igneous rocks found near the site of w.e. it is you found is what is generally used to find the age of the object.

dicks..

Thing is, atheism doesn't need an organisation, because it's simply a choice not to believe in religion. I don't see why a group of people would feel the need to get together on a regular basis to discuss about how they don't believe in something - they'd just live their lives and move on.
exactly, its more... lack of belief than anything else

Aliens researching the scorched remains of planet Earth in a distant future will have no problem precisely dating everything, with all the radioisotopes humanity has produced.
Although, they maybe can skip that part and just look at a backup of the Facebook servers, as every single human will surely have a profile there.

Maybe Noah reinforced his ark with depleted uranium to prepare for Armageddon.

Exactly.

Atheism groups would be a bit like people getting together to actively disbelieve in Santa.

If you don't believe in it, there's really not much point even going there.

no, not all catholics think evolution is the devil and carbon dating only works up to 10k years
