The shop who sold me my computer threw in W7 Ultimate for free (legit copy), but didn't seem to bother with giving me the CDs..

It's a 32-bit version, and I would like to 'upgrade' to 64 bit, but I'm not sure if that's possible without the discs.

Would I need to borrow a W7 CD or "aquire" one, or is there a way to reinstall from within Windows, and still convert to 64 bit?

Also:
I have all my big programs/games on a seperate partition. Would I still need to reinstall them?

I copied all my games over from a 32 bit XP straight onto a 64bit Win 7 and had no issues. I don't think you do.

Hmm..alright, that's good.

What about 'converting' it to 64 bit? Am I going to have to borrow someone's 64 disc?

you can't convert an installation, from x86 to x64.

If you have the sticker with the serial it should be do-able through downloaded ISOs

Legit downloads or no?

I checked certain sites, but they all say they don't require a cd key. Could I just enter my key and turn it into a legit copy?

No, the cracked ones are risky to use your serial on if you can, they could have built something in there to sniff it out or something while they cracked it...

Try to find a rip of the original DVD unmodified... I'm sure you can find discussions on the correct filesize for the iso somewhere...

I have a MS academic alliance account (win4free:)) so I can tell you the size of the ISO I can download directly from MS...

Might be a long shot but do they do a trial/evaluation copy?
One of the types you have to then go and buy and enter in a cd key for?
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

For an OS?  Sounds pretty dumb lol.

Or the windows 7 beta that was leaked early last year, I was talking about an updated version of that or something.

#edit: plus I wouldn't put:

Past Microsoft.

Hmmm...I only found a CloneDVD on one site, and my ratio is pretty shit there...not sure if it can take the hit.

Why bother with private trackers?

It's not illegal if you own it, so go to a pub tracker

Well if you get a torrent with plenty of comments or an official release then there shouldn't be a problem?

of course nothing beats the files / discs directly from MS

Errr...my computer refuses to go past the "detecting devices" screen when the 64 dvd is in the drive.

It's an older IDE drive I just put in today, so that might be part of the problem.

Trying to put it on a usb drive gives me this:

This version of E:\boot\bootsect.exe is not compatible with the version of Windo
ws you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you n
eed a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the
software publisher.

Edit: Since it keeps giving me that, I think that's why it won't boot up from the CD.
I guess I'll have to format, then boot from the CD.

IIRC the windows 7 disk is supposed to contain both versions. I know for academic releases they did make separate ISO's for 32 and 64 bit, and they may have done the same for OEM... But are you sure your disk is strictly a 32 bit version?

Torrent came with them separate.

(CloneDVD since I got a legit key.)

I heard it might be my IDE drive being dumb on me.

New problem:
I got 64 bit to work (installed from a SATA drive instead of IDE), but now it's telling me my activation key is invalid.

It did let me install with it though.
