i7 Overclocking

Hey y'all

So I've got an i7 920 D0 on a P6T Deluxe V2 board with a Scythe cooler and guess what? Its STILL at stock speeds, embarrassing I know... Anyways Before i start fucking with the AI tweaker in the bios I wanted to clear up few questions.

baseclock, from what i understand 1366 chips dont use FSB but rather the baseclock to control processor clock speed, NB frequency, Memory frequency, and QPI (chip set frequency). So, do I only need to raise the baseclock BCLK from teh stock 133 or whatever to the value I desire can I leave the other items at auto, will they automatically adjust based on the baseclock and the set multipliers?? By raising baseclock will my memory speeds automatically adjust?

Im not looking for anything crazy, probably around 3.4ghz and upping my memory speed.

ok by my math bclk of 170 *20 multiplier would give me 3400mhz clock speed, i just need to know how to make sure my memory is properly adjusted..

Hmm my memory is DDR32000 PC3 16000, basically it CAN operate at up to 2000mhz @ 1.65 volts.. running a 170 base clock with a 10 x memory multiplier will yeild 1700mhz, should i bump the voltage up to 1.65 for this?

** well according to the guide ive been studying over the past few days (the same one linked above) I should be using a uncore muliplier twice that of the memory multiplier. so technically I could run a baseclock of 170 with a 20 cpu multiplier and just keep the nominal multiplier for the memory at 8 and that would keep the uncore at 16.. These pre-registerd values would reflect the new baseclock and adjust the speeds accordingly. My only concern is if i need to boost voltage.. i think vcore would be ok at stock, but what about sdram voltage?

BTW which scythe cooler is it?

Set these:

1.225Vcore
1.275V QPI
1.2V IOH
1.65V DRAM Bus

BCLK 165 x MULTIPLIER 21

Try to keep ram around 1600MHz at first to find best CPU overclock. Depending on the cooler, you can get 4GHz out of it easily...

If you can't set the multiplier manually to 21x, go to CPU settings and enable speedstep and enable turbo mode.

Mugen II, its absolutely HUGE, one 120mm on it. So really its just a matter of upping the baseclock, and 170 (3.4ghz) is nothing for a D0 i7 from what i've read.

One last thing, keep an eye on the temps and check stability with 20x LinX passes. Temps are fine as long as they are under ~82c, 80c is still fine for LinX max temp.

Use something like coretemp so you see the core temperatures, not the average from IHS.

From what I've read its pretty easy. Just the architecture of the chip is substantially different than the LGA775 series, that guide i read over the weekend was substantially informative. It seems like the new architecture is actually quite simple as four of the main busses are linked to the one baseclock frequency. All other speeds are baseclock x multiplier. The nominal i7 920 baseclock is 133 and the nominal multi is 20 133 * 20= 2660 or 2.66ghz. Once you understand the multipliers you're good to go.

Lets see... I have overclocked both C0 and D0 stepping i7s with multiple boards on my own, and helped to OC about 30 C0/D0 spetting i7s of other ppl and have had an i7 since it was launched.

It was interesting and complex (new) when it came out, the first chips were sometimes bitch to OC and no one really knew what all the things do. But we figured some out some voltage combinations that work well and what is needed and when and now its as simple as setting few values from BIOS.

When you get past 4.2GHz and want >2000MHz ram, then it gets complex.

Yeah i know. Long story short I got it to 3.4ghz on the first run idle at 36/39. Prime95 torture test had it @ 76c with no errors in a blended test.
