Not really...12" screen is perfect for a netbook IMO.
I have around 14" laptop. 13.3" laptops are not hard to find either.

You lose all the benefits of netbook (mobility).

I agree, as soon as we go >10" it's a laptop,, not a fully portable netbook

Don't get one.  Trust me.  I had five netbooks.  Only one left that is hardly ever used.  The ones I've given away, they've given away to someone else after they got over the "cute/in" factor.

Get a 14" or 13.3" laptop.  Right balance of real estate and mobility.  Not to mention capability.

Yep, think twice how much you need pure web browsing PC. It is very limited in other use.

Extremely valid points, i have my desktop, which i might yet break up and sell on. I don't have the time and inclination to 'game' any more and its annoying to sit in the back room with a rig powering away just to log into bf2s to insult some members.

I'll give it a couple more days thought.

Unreliable pieces of crap. Utterly useless for anything other than checking email. 640x480 res sucks. One USB port=Fail. No install disks, forget about it if you corrupt your OS, the system restore shit rarely works if you get a virus.

I really hate working on them.

Get an iPhone or Blackberry Storm. You'll be much happier.

Actually, I take that back, don't get a Storm1. I've just sent back 4 in a row. The first two had huge dead spots in the middle of the screen where it just wouldn't recognise your touch, the second two have frozen up randomly while typing. You have to take the battery out to reboot them.

So iPhone or Storm 2, that's my vote.

Hmm few things I would like to point out...

"Utterly useless for anything other than checking email." Ahem they are useful for a lot other stuff too, especially the newer ones that can actually play videos properly and have higher end Atom CPUs...

"640x480 res sucks." Newer ones have 1024 or higher resolutions.

"One USB port=Fail" Pretty much all newer ones have 2-4 USB ports, netbooks with one USB are ancient POS.

"No install disks, forget about it if you corrupt your OS" Ever heard of installing OS off USB stick? Well it is pretty easy, lots of guides off the interwebs.

Where as the phones don't even have any of that, how would they be any better?

This looks promising, considering the resoluton and battery life.

If you're going to keep your desktop, get a netbook.

If you're going to ditch the desktop, get a laptop.

If you get a netbook, don't get an Acer.

If you do get a netbook, you should seriously consider Asus.

if you do get a netbook, you should stick with XP. Don't get sucked into stupid hype. There is nothing 7 does better than XP on a netbook.

Personally I tried Jolicloud and I couldn't get the wireless to work. I don't know why, I think the problem might have been trying to fight through the UI and not the actual wireless compatibility. It felt very beta-y.

Though I was lazy/prudent and didn't wipe XP, I installed through XP, so take that with a grain of salt.

Jolicloud is this shit, I have it on my lappy, makes Mozilla ridiculously fast.

That is just my experience, I know a lot of people are happy with it and it looked really promising. I'm just saying it is still in beta.

I would seriously buy a Macbook if i could justify the expense, i just can't do it for a web browser.

@ FM, you're not the first person to say 'stick with XP'. I've been told the netbooks with XP OS run much faster, i'd really like W7 tho but when i really think about it i should stick with XP.

whats this jolicloud stuff? is it like a virtual OS?

As you've already posted in the Jolicloud thread, I assume you know what it's all about. Have fun with it. Give yourself like a 10GB partition on your HDD to make sure you also have some space and you don't have to mount/unmount your Windows partition just to save a text document or something.

So i install Jolicloud along side the Windows OS? Can you explain further what the purpose of the partition is? And is it easy enough to create?

I decided i'm going to buy a Samsung N150

£280, a little more than i wanted to spend but it's a better processor, more battery life and matt finish screen.

Jolicloud is an operating system, just like Windows or OSX or Ubuntu, made by Mozilla, and designed especially for netbooks. It's low on power consumption, and works well with space for when you have a really small screen. You can download the whole thing (it's about 700MB), as an .exe, run that from inside windows, and it does it all for you. You just have to specify how much space you want on your new jolicloud install, and then leave it to it.
