Or on a more serious note, teach them about saving things in correct places ie photos in photo folders, documents in documents etc.

It has pretty much been said, but basically:
- email (to keep in touch with relatives, friends)
- basic use of the web, like a how it works..
- news websites
- searching on google
- family trees
- wikipedia!

My grandad is really into history - he has a fucktonne of books on various things. Now last year he got a laptop and wireless intenet, so my bro and I taught him the basics and shit like that. You wouldn't believe how much he likes wikipedia.. pages and pages of info on all the historical things he is into.

One thing to remember, and this goes for ANY topic you choose, is that you can't take anything for granted. Plan exactly what you want to teach, and the steps involved with doing various things. It took 4-5 times of doing the same thing before my grandad could do the task by himself.. cause old folks aren't as "wired" (for lack of better word ) as we are for all this tech stuff. If you don't provide clear stepwise instructions on each thing, they will likely be confused.. and then frustrated at being unable to complete an apparently easy task.
