I'm not saying I'm good at business. Lol. I'd make the next Enron. Just saying, I know why they do it. Because it works. I don't know the details, but they probably wouldn't do it so much if it didn't work. Don't mean to appear stuck-uppity, so, sorry.

Door-to-door salesmen: Don’t you hate it when hyperactive under age children bombard you with questions nonstop? And when they pick on your newborn as well? Salesmen aren’t as bad as they used to be, other than the occasional Jehovah’s witness or carpet salesmen. If they go solo, they’re usually trying to scam you or sell you something. In that case, outwit them, or have fun verbally tongue tying them. If they work for a company, and are persistent, well, that’s where your local friendly Channel 8 news team comes in.
Thats me.
Also, unless you also work in sales or sit around your house thinking of ways to outwit a salesman, you will not outwit a salesman. I knock on a hundred doors a day and have built in responses for every single thing you can say, however you only get to speak to a d2d salesman once in a while.

and i would never touch your baby thats nasty.

and its a misconception that d2d salesman are scammers. people have a natural resistance to salesman, its like when you go to a store and a worker asks ''can i help you find something'' and you automatically just say no.

I know not all are scammers, but, in my area, a lot of them are. Don't mean to call you a scammer.

Guilt marketing: Many people, me included, have a special hate for these. Not only do they appeal to our most generous and kind emotions, they often don’t even use the money for any non-greed related cause. For example, McDonalds advertises that they put 10 cents from every happy meal into their personal charity fund. This is pretty sneaky, because they know that children make up a large part of their consumer base, and they use this deal to also guilt parents into buying their kids McDonalds instead of maybe going to another restaurant. However, since happy meals are pretty cheap, meaning that giving away ten cents a meal decreases a large amount of profits, and since the money goes to a good cause, they can be pardoned.
Wut. I stopped reading here, as I feel you lack a sufficient grasp of (ironically) "real world" business operations...

Reading this, especially with the highlighted "also", it seems as though the primary motivator for McDonalds to donate to charity is because it is a factor children take into consideration when deciding to get a happy meal. A five year old couldn't care less if McDonalds was being socially responsible.. they care about the toy!   Its effect on parents would then just be a secondary consideration.. maybe it was worded incorrectly?

Anyway, this is a pretty interesting read.. http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/mcd/csr.html .. to show they aren't blowing it out their arse with the ad.

Also.. I was going to.. inform.. you as to the financial effect of such a donation.. but I just cbf. Go read the McDonalds 2009 Annual Report to learn some about the company's financial position..

Watch TV that doesn't have adverts on, like BBC or something
Change channel when adverts are on
Do something productive while adverts are on
Listen to Radio stations that don't have adverts
Get adblock for your browser
Visit decent websites that are not inundated with adverts
Read decent news papers
Don't read trashy magazines
Change phone number

There's a few practical solutions.

Also I think I disagree with the vast majority of this OP, but I'm too lazy to write out a massive reply.
