And lol. No. OS X is better than Windows... no one I know who uses a Mac prefers to run Windows on it.

... no one.
Like a lot of stuff tbh - showing hidden files and folders for example.

I'd say Windows is better than OSX, on balance. But for the majority of people who use OSX, it is better for them than Windows.

You can't really compare them.. Sure, OSX is fast, but if you disable all the bloatware, Windows 7 can be almost as fast if not just as fast.

OSX is for people who just want it installed already and not have to fuck about with things. Windows is more for people who like to customize things to just how they want it.

in addition to what bertster said, i also have a need to enable ntlmv2 on a mac to make it work with my kerberized active directory.  in windows this is a simple setting in the group policy, in the mac i have to sudo nano the smb.conf file.  since windows 7 its ntlmv2 by default, whereas the mac is still using the inferior ntlm auth level.  thats fail by design right there since they are insecure out of the box.  this is one instance where windows security trumps the mac.

second of all, i said it was a subjective opinion, meaning it's an opinion.  you like the mac better, i like windows better.  there is no argument here since it never ends.  and i know plenty of people who prefer windows on their overpriced hardware.  BUT i also know people who prefer a hackintosh on their cheap hardware.  its all about what you need to do tbh... i'm a network guy who needs very granular control of my os's, whereas you might be a design guy who needs the superior video editing tools the mac has to offer.  they both have their pros and cons, but MY preference is a windows-based OS.

I just got owned.. I guess the average user doesn't need to do aaaaany of what you do

With regards to turning on and off hidden files - once you know the terminal command, are you able to use AppleScript Editor to create an application (lets call it ShowHiddenFiles.app) that will run the command in Terminal? So in effect, you double click "ShowHiddenFiles.app" and ta-da.. you can see them. Or hell.. can you set a keyboard shortcut to run the script?

Where does one start when it comes to learning some of this stuff?

When I get a proper job, I'm going to come to this forum and post some questions on the right Mac for me. I want to buy one and actually live with one after dealing with Linux and Windows on a daily basis for my entire life...

it has nothing to do with learning any of that stuff... i know both OS's quite well, and as said before, it's just personal preference.  why do mac users so often have to argue about why they think their OS is superior?  it's just MY opinion!  if you like the color red, and i like blue, why would you feel the need to argue with me about why your color is better?  both OS's have their strengths and weaknesses, and when it comes to my day to day activities, i prefer windows, just as you prefer osx.  there is really nothing to debate.

If you buy an Apple computer and use it as-is, you're gay.
If you buy a non-Apple computer and run Windows on it, you're a conformist.
If you buy an Apple computer and run Windows on it, you're a rich conformist.
If you buy a non-Apple computer and take the time to run GNU/Linux on it, you're poor.
If you buy an Apple computer and run GNU/Linux on it, you just think Macs get you laid.

In short, you're a moron no matter what sort of hardware-software combination you run.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Just chuck a normal USB mouse on it, that's all I did at work.  I'm sure there's one somewhere that wouldn't look out of place on a mac.

dude you do know that tapping two fingers on the mouse-pad at once = right-click, yes?

and holding two fingers on the mousepad and dragging = scrolling

You can change that can't you, so that you just click on the right side of the trackpad to right click? My flatmate loves it on his, but I fucking hate it.

yeah you can customize the trackpad to do 101 things with different finger combinations / drags / directions
