Right so my brother has told me over the phone the following:

His PC worked perfectly fine this morning. He shut it down when he got up and went to work. When he arrived home from work it doesn't work anymore.

The motherboard does a single beep indicating the hardware is fine.
It shows the initial splash screen (showing intel amongst other things in his case), then shows the 'press Del to enter setup' screen and at that instant it freezes. This means he can't enter BIOS settings, advanced startup options or anything. The computer keeps running but he can't do a thing.

He's tried resetting the CMOS, both with and without the battery in, and he's tried removing various bits of hardware just in case. And he now is out of ideas. He has an ASUS P5QE.

Any thoughts?

are there diagnostic lights on the system board anywhere?  there may be more to it than just the beep code.  it sounds like a mobo issue, since he can't get into the bios at all.

I remember having this same problem.

It turned out that my HD was broken, if I remember correctly.

Shouldn't be the HDD if he hasn't even gotten to the HDD in the boot process.

Can he open the boot window, Yoda?
