Outside there is a power box, the one where the electrical company gets readings from, and before they installed FiOS I never realized it but there was a small piece of metal connected to the corner of the box with a wire coming out of it that says Cable TV on it.  The other end of the wire is clipped off now but if I remeber, it attached onto the screw that sticks up on a coaxial splitter, it looks like some kind of ground connection or something

What did this thing do?

Worry not - CMTS units come with simple backdoor systems and full traffic interception capabilities right out of the box. They wouldn't even need to leave their office, and even the ISP wouldn't know about the tap unless they specifically monitored for it.

What did it do for the power box though as a ground since it's apparently not needed.  Would it have reduced the readings or anything?
