My friend and myself pretty much have the same specs up to and including the same internet connection...until you get to the HDD. He got the raptors and he is always in first 100%.
Raptor way outperforms any SATA/EIDE crap out there Faster access to data = faster load times. Whether it be in BF2 or booting Windows

I have 2 Gigs of RAM, 3.06 GHz processor and a 128 MB video card. Excellent for my laptop.
I used to load close to the top of the list. There were 16-player maps where I could cap most flags before the majority of players even loaded. I have killed one opponent and been able to cap all the flags and win the round with a gold star and 8 points.
The guys that I game with have 4 Gigs of RAM, good processors and 2x 256 MB video cards in SLI configurations. These guys are done loading and on the map before I am at 30% on the load screen.
I believe that they have loaded faster than the server !!
Now I see that I load slower than many other players. Even on small 16 player servers, I am usually around the third to start. I believe that more players are adding RAM to get an extra edge in the game.
Long story short. Get 2 Gigs of RAM at a minimum. Upgrade your system as you have the capabilities. It is unreal how a great system can play this game. When all your video settings are on High, you see some details that you never knew were there before.
For a blast, we hook up a projector and play on the wall screen. On a 19" screen you do not even notice the movements in the distance. But on a screen the size of your wall, anything odd stands out.
