In the past few days Windows 7 Ultimate 64 has started to boot slowly.

What happens is this: power button, usually BIOS and post messages, then gets to the "Windows Starting" screen and... nothing happens. Then after maybe a minute the colours appear and Windows boots normally, with normal operation afterwards. Shutdown is slightly slower too, but negligible.

Previous to this it would get to the Windows logo screen and start loading the logo immediately.

I can't think of any major software changes that have occurred in the past week other than installing and running Malwarebytes AM and running a scan (nothing detected). I haven't made any hardware changes, Windows Startup Repair didn't detect any issues, all my Windows Updates have been updated.

I've searched through Google for about half an hour or so and have to go out (going to see a band - Birds of Tokyo) so I thought I'd leave it in your capable hands and see if any of you guys could possibly help me please?

clear temporary files (try using ccleaner)
defragment if needed (though it should be doing it automatically)
use msconfig to get rid of unwanted startup programs
try some more antivirus/spyware software. Microsoft security essentials, spybot s&d
check hdd isn't nearing capacity, if it is: clear some files

I'm not really sure that those things will necessarily fix your problem. but worth a try, anyway

Thanks for the reply.

I ran CCleaner, defragged (D drive had 12% fragmentation from windows backup, I couldn't defrag so I deleted the file - about 36GB in size), msconfig has about 4 processes running on startup, haven't run a scan yet but nothing so far has made a difference. C drive is about 60% full and D around 70%.

Yeah everytime now. It's weird because it runs exactly as it always has (quick) once booted.

i noticed that when my computer does that, it takes about 1 1/2 for the logo to come up but after that everything seems like has been loaded already, like after the blue screen says "loading please wait" everything is ready to go, everything comes up in a instant and i could be doing anything is a matter of seconds.
when instead of of the logo showing like it supposed to without the delay, then i have to wait around 1 minutes for all the programs to load up

I'm not quite sure I understand. You mean instead of Windows loading quickly and then the desktop loading, Windows takes a long time to load but the desktop is ready to go once it gets there?

My problem is that the desktop is taking the normal time to load with the programs I want running as per msconfig (10-15 seconds), but the loading screen is taking 10 times longer than normal, with no obvious cause.

sfc /scannow in cmd or chkdsk in cmd.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

chkdsk:
Stage 1: 103 large file records processed, 0 bad file records processed, 2 EA records processed, 76 reparse records processed.
Stage 2: 0 unindexed files scanned, 0 unindexed files recovered
Stage 3: blah blah blah... Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

Hmm, so everything seems fine. Now what?

You can try reinstalling your video drivers by using Driver Sweeper, and the same thing with your audio drivers, and then also make sure the rest of your drivers are up to date.

You can also try unplugging all USB related peripherals and try booting.

is it still booting slowly....
here I found this on another forum

1. run "msconfig" - startup tab - disable all except your antivirus software (i use a light microsoft security essentials). services tab - click hide microsoft services, and disable all other services which show up except for services which run with your antivirus program. boot tab - advanced options: select hiytghest number of processors and highest available selection for memory. also check "no gui boot".


2. run disk cleanup
or clean manager from windows system32 folder. clean all system files and drive files.


3. run checkdisk and defrag your hardisk.


4. update antivirus and scan your pc. i suggest microsoft security essentials for antivirus, malwarebytes antimalware and trojan remover for malware and other spyware.


5. uninstall programs which you do not regularly use. you can download
it from the web as needed.


6. check steps 1 to 4 is done at least once a month and I expect your pc and your computer use will just be fine.

If you suspect you have software problems related to drivers or your hardware, you can check it by right-clicking my computer and click manage. If there really is a problem on any of the hardware drivers, windows will highlight it with yellow so you can see it. If you do not see any, most probably there's no problem.

As mentioned by the previous posts, it is true that updating hardware drivers would help. Make sure you download drivers from the brand site of your product. Or if it is an assembled pc, you can get it from the hardware manufacturer's site. They usually post the lates software updates for their products.

Hmmm, I'm a little hesitant to use system optimisers. On my last system I tried using a few of these and it made my system worse, took me a week to get it back to normal. On another forum they ended up recommending I not use these. I've got a good registry cleaner (RegCure), good defregger (Auslogics), good AV (Avira), also ran Malwarebytes and Spybot.

I've tried everything else as per the posts in this thread but so far it's made little to no difference

Ummm... it seems to be fixed.

I replaced my stock CPU cooler, put everything back and now it's loading up fine. Weird I tells ya!

Yeah just got home from work, booted up fine. Have no idea, but like you say, as long as it works it's all good.
