Thought you might want to look at this. Transparent Aluminum. No longer science fiction but now science fact.
What will they think of next...

Dude, that's awesome!  I knew it was real all along!!

Even cooler, Wright Patterson is an hour away from here.  I'll have to see about making a trip out there soon!

interesting... hate to see it in land vehicles though; theres a reason why everyone hates the m113s aluminium armour... aluminium has a tendancy to burn... burn very very hot

@Dave, I don't want to burst any bubbles, but it said they were testing it at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD.  Not that any trip to a military installation is without benefit.  I like to go and just look around...

Topic:  Any substance would be transparent, if you made it thin enough.  I don't know if you had really thin aluminum if it would stop bullets though...  I mean, it would be like using tin foil for armor.  This stuff sounds way better.  It says that the military currently uses layered glass for armor.  I'm not entirely disagreeing, but when a tree fell on my hummer during a convoy after a truck hit it, the window was determined to be plastic and not glass.

I guess it depends on the kind of armor used. Was yours specifically armored? This one is layered..

This...

Its not aluminum, and its not metal... It a clear ceramic that contains some elemental Aluminum.

That is like saying that hydrogen is good for putting out fires... just use H20
