What would you need to do that with a single lens instead of the massive reverse lens contraption you have set up? 100mm?

The only lens that goes past 1x is the canon MPE-65, which goes from 1x-5x. If you have a point and shoot with a good zoom, a Raynox dcr-250 will work pretty well from what Ive seen. Reversing rings and extension tubes are the cheapest way to go though, I spent maybe $30 on them
EDIT: Oh yeah the 100mm macros only go to 1x
