IBM was once THE company to work for - solid employment, generous retirement, job security, and a gold watch. i hope you experience all these Microwave, but times, they are a changin. with parallel computing Big Blue isn't rock solid like they were. They are however IBM.
IBM and Motorola were two of the companies I wanted to work for, but both (mostly Motorola) had semi-annual layoffs in the 90's. My sister managed to retire (forced early retirement) from Motorola.
UPDATE: My Point: I was looking for a company with job security, so I ended up working for Compaq until HP bought them out

Working at the "gem of the IBM's UK crown" ......supposedly which is Hursley labs near Southampton.
Pretty nervous about it but hopefully should be good. Been told it's one of the best placement companies to work for so I'm hopeful!

For a student placement year he wont go far wrong with that job. Employers will want to see genuine work experience so he'll have a massive head start than most graduates.burnzz wrote:

Start applying for jobs while you're working @ IBM Jimbo, you really don't want to juggle final year commitments with ball aching job applications interviews & assessment centres.
From an IT consulting perspective IBM is is not well regarded I am afraid, just choose carefully with your chosen career path should you stick with IBM.

Bloody big exam today, half of my first years modules. Feel really unprepared for it, need to get 65% to go to Colorado for the next year, if I don't make it I simply stay here in Lancaster for the next year instead.
