I had stopped playing BF2 for the past couple weeks because of finals. Today I tried playing for the first time since I stopped, and the game simply won't launch. I click my shortcut, the screen goes black as if it's about to start, and then I get kicked back to my desktop with no error message. It worked just fine a few weeks ago. This happens with both BF2 and SF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In order to get an error message you need to launch bf2 in windowed mode. In your shortcut properties there is a variable after the location of the bf2.exe file, something to the effect of +fullscreen 1. Change that to 0 and start bf2, it should crash as usual and give you an error message.

Post that error message here so we may help you resolve the issue.

Yeap In order for us to help u wee need32 know what is casing the crash to desktop, it could be screen resolujtion is wrong, or it could be you have 1 of the files curapted in BF2 or u simply renamed your BF2 on desktop ( which will not work unless u make coppy of it from root BF2 it self :-)

Well, looks like I made the mistake of not searching enough. Because of the lack of error message I had a hard time thinking of things to search for (ie. I tried "crash right away", "won't launch", etc).

Eventually (after starting this thread), I googled "battlefield 2 immediately crashes" and found out that resolutions/refresh rates set in the video.con can cause the game to crash on launch. During my hiatus I had bought a new LCD monitor, so my refresh rate changed from 75Hz with my old CRT to 60Hz with my new LCD. Sorry I didn't catch the problem before posting, but I'm gonna leave the thread (instead of deleting) incase someone else ever has the same problem.

Thanks for the quick responses though.
