Phew...
What a couple of weeks it's been. Who would have thought, even a fortnight ago, that New Zealand would be bowing out of the World Cup undefeated? And yeah there's is a bit of disappointment, like I said I along with many others hoped for a Disney-esque finish, a nil all draw doesn't really seem very fitting.
But New Zealand is leaving the World Cup undefeated.
For a team ranked 78th in the world on official rankings, a team made up of local league players and part timers, (Andy Barron is an accountant at a Westpac branch in Wellington for example,) a team that was ridiculed in the international media prior to the tournament, a team that was there as cannon fodder, just to make up numbers - they're leaving the World Cup undefeated.
This team has very little international experience. What big games they get only come around every few years, suffice to say they're inexperienced at the top levels.
But they're leaving the World Cup undefeated.
The last time New Zealand made an appearance at the World Cup was in 1982. They lost their three pools games by three to four goal margins and it was still considered a fantastic result for the nation because we were there. In 2010, like 1982, the thrill was also just being there - but this time New Zealand leaves the World Cup undefeated.
And yeah that may be taking a positive spin on it. After all we didn't win any games but that shouldn't take away from the All Whites' achievement here. They're still finishing above both France and Italy in points.
And on that note - Slovakia! Ha! Man I would be kind of mad with them for causing a result that keeps New Zealand from progressing but you just can't be mad at a team that makes the Italian team cry - and mean it. I have to say that's got to be karma biting Italy in the arse and deservedly so too. Group F got it's Cinderella story after all with an all but written-out Slovakian team leapfrogging two teams to go on to the second round and kicking Italy out in the process too. Bloody brilliant result.
And the All Whites will be fine. No doubt there's a lot of disappointment in the camp at the moment but they're returning home heroes, converting the nation to football in the process.. And they'll be back too. They achieved what they set out to achieve; they proved that they're a team that belongs on the international stage. I'm hoping this will lead to more chances to have big international matches to build on the team's experience.
And just think: In 1982 New Zealand had the first round results of three losses, in 2010, three draws.
Bring on 2014!

I can see it happening too again now that Australia have fucked off to the Asian Qualification region, New Zealand could be at many more World Cups to come and I'm sure football has gained a massive reputation these past few weeks in NZTy wrote:

Your cricket and rugby teams are much better than your football teams, why does nobody make a big deal out of them in NZ. Even now for us. The English cricket team has won the Ashes, won the T20 championship and are beating the Aussies easily right now in the ODI's yet people care more about fucking Tennis. I can understand that football is bigger than cricket in the UK, but fucking tennis? How have we come to this?
tennis is a fun sport mek, you just can't play
Because the truth is no one gives a shit about ODIs any more, especially now we've played about 231910293 times in the last year or so.Mekstizzle wrote:

Shame, because (offtopic) it would be good - the fact that we have our third-choice bowling line up and half a batting order out of form makes it a fair contest

Less talk of cricket please. This thread is for discussing a proper sport.
