They're putting it in the oceans? Cameron's gonna need amazing special effects and an actually decent storyline for this one.

He had amazing special effects in the first one. To expect that he would go away from his highest grossing movie ever formula is a little naive, don't you think?

I don't think he 'needs' to do much to create another blockbuster.  I'm not sure his intent is to make an art-house equivalent of Citizen Kane.

I thought the movie was quite entertaining and James Cameron doesn't exactly make what I would call bad movies.

The Avatar hate I've encountered seems to mostly stem from the cool kid bandwagon. It's sci-fi; it doesn't have to be Citizen Kane. Even with 'unobtanium,' there's nothing wrong with the picture, and I will see the second.

I thought the unobtanium name was a bit cheesy, too, but when you look at the periodic table, the heavier elements don't exactly have the most creative of names.

yes because 'hegemony seeks to exploit the resources of peaceful natives' was a totally original concept.

Agreed, it's not like the plots of his other movies are exactly ground breaking.

Aliens: they go rescue some people from aliens, shit goes down
Titanic: ship hits iceberg, shit goes down
Abyss: People get stuck underwater, shit goes down

That's not to say that he isn't a fantastic director though. I love all (I think) of his movies.

Some people automatically hate what's popular, which is fair enough because the general world populace is devoid of taste. Avatar though in 3d, didn't suck. It was at least 6 out of 10 by anyones standards.

For all we know, some film geek will name a new element unobtanium in the future.

Yes, but we don't have to sit through the sap and poor historical portrayal in Disney's Pocahontas.

Avatar 2!!! holy shit.  Okay, nerd time

Unobtanium is a real word used by scientists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium

Story is not always the most important characteristic of a film.  Avatar's plot was fairly shallow (intentionally so), but just because it's not complex or totally groundbreaking does not make it throwaway. Avatar was great not because of the "3d" effects but because of the cinematography.  The amount of quality, polish, editing, etc. that went into the film was an achievement on it's own... something which the average moviegoer often doesn't recognize but is as important to any film as the writing.

It's an archetypal storyline until Avatar comes along and then it's just a rip off?

Yet, somehow it was completely more interesting than the Star Wars prequels, which prized special effects over story.

'Unobtanium' Is a generic term, like 'rocking horse shit', it doesn't matter - why does everyone get so worked up over it?

They're making a third as well.

But I'll be looking forward to it. I wouldn't say any of Jim Cameron's films were bad because they're so well made, and while the storylines aren't always the strongest they're executed excellently.
