My laptop is fubar. when I turn it on it will show the post screen(or whatever that initial screen is called that show like press F2 for BIOS ect.) then after that I get a black screen of death. it will just sit there for ever. any ideas? I think the HDD is dead but I have no way of telling because  cant get the bastard out without taking the whole lappy apart. It will also boot Ubuntu from the Live disk but I cant access the HDD.

It has an Intel duo core, 3gb ram 250gb HDD, ATI HD 2400, Windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

Certainly sounds like HDD.

Do you have a flash drive you can use to install ubuntu? Can you get to the boot list, or BIOS and see if the HDD is showing there?

yes I can get to the boot list and the HDD does show up in the BIOS. Install ubuntu on the flash drive or the lappy?

on the flash drive. I don't imagine you could install it on the lappy with a broken HDD

Its easy to install to usb.  boot from ubuntu live cd and one of the menu choices is "create usb startup disk".  insert usb drive (minimum 2gb) and install.  it will create a "persistent" drive which remembers your settings and lets you save stuff.   It can be done with a 1gb drive, but you'll soon run out of room from browser cache files, etc.  go with a 4gb flash drive and have no worries.

another option,  download linuxliveusb on a working windows computer, download the linux distro of your choice and it will install it to the flash drive.  It works great.   I might also suggest going with Mint 9, or peppermint linux.  (mint 9 is a fancier version of ubuntu, and has all the codecs and flash installed).

My flatmate had the same problem, it ended up simply being the HDD had slipped out of position slightly. Once he screwed it back in it was fine, and that was 3 months ago, no problems since.

I can boot off of it yes same with the Linux live CD

It sees the HDD but I cant access it it says something like failed to respond
